Re: Adaptronic owners thread
I'm not sure if this is common knowledge but I thought I'd post this up to increase the collective wisdom of the group. I finally got the throttle tip in stumble sorted by David at MX5 Mania. I was thinking it was possibly caused by the location of the MAP sensor pick up point being so close to the throttle plate but David worked out that the timing off boost at low revs was really low in the NB8B/SP base map. He bumped that up and that reduced the stumble considerably. Then he reduced the Asynch gain and had a play with the predicted MAP table which has eliminated the stumble. In doing so he achieved something that even Andy from Adaptonic couldn't. So now no more stalling when moving off from a stop.
David also reduced the max PID correction in the wastegate table which has eliminated the overboost problem it was having which has subsequently let me fine tune the wastegate base duty cycle to get the boost to come on the way I liked.
I was far from impressed after the ECU initial installation and I'm grateful for David spending extra time on it to get it right. It has taken a while to work through all the issues. It's still not 100% the way I want it but it's pretty darn close now.
I'm extremely impressed with how smooth it drives now and the improved responsiveness over stock is amazing. It really doesn't feel like a turbo car any more. There's no decernable lag now, it just goes, instant power. It's making more power on lower boost than it did with the "factory" SP tune with a bonus marked improvement in fuel economy. It's a pity Mazda didn't do it right when they had the opportunity. I have no idea how they thought the massive stutter on throttle lift off under boost was acceptable.
With the new neutral switch installed and the idle working almost as good as stock I'm really liking the Adaptonic now. It's made the old girl drive like the current generation of turbo cars.
If anyone still has a stock SP I'd highly recommend getting a new ECU, Adaptronic or other brand, and more importantly, a tuner that is very familiar with your chosen ECU. It turns a really great car into an awesome car.

Re: Adaptronic owners thread
Great news Garry,
I know both Kenny and myself were stunned how smooth the adaptronic made our SEs feel.
I haven't had the same stutter issue yours had, In my case it made the SE feel like a turbo car again.
I think Mazda's initial tune on the SPs was to be nice and safe and avoid warranty claims, once that mid throttle stutter was found I think Mazda didn't want to spend any more cash to fix an issue that was reported in less than 100 cars.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: Adaptronic owners thread
From what I've heard the SP project was massively over budget what with starting with the supercharged engine in the NB8A and then switching to turbo in the NB8B and then issues with emissions certifications. I think you are right Okibi, they just made it as acceptable as they could on the remaining budget and put it in the market.
Changing the way the car feels is easy. Just play with the wastegate table. I wasn't chasing big power increases, I was more chasing improved driveability. I was aiming for a naturally asperated feel rather than the old school all or nothing turbo feel. And that's one of the advantages of a different ECU. It's possible to set up the feel of the car the way you like it.

Re: Adaptronic owners thread
Depends on what you will be doing with the map signal. If you have a tps and relying on that for accel then cleaner signal from reg is better. If not and using map for accel enrichment then best off near throttle

Re: Adaptronic owners thread
Since the open sprints are done and I won't be on track again for another month, I reinstalled the Adaptronic and went for a short drive. 100% unmodified base map, and still running on the narrowband sensor because I forgot to set it to use the wideband through the serial input. Rough start is due to the dodgy coilpack plug I still haven't fixed, rich on cold start but quickly leveled off. Based on 3km of driving, very impressed. Strong idle, acceleration enrichment is very good right off the bat, maybe a little bit abrupt on and off throttle but nothing major. Even the overrun fuel cut is enabled by default and works perfectly, AC idle-up and rad fan load accounted for etc too. Incredible the difference between the Adaptronic and the Megasquirt I fought with before.

eSel038. It's the 440 but with plugs and base map to suit nb8a.

Re: Adaptronic owners thread
I spoke to chequered tuning they say they don't do mx5s with adaptronic.. Too problematic.. Wtf? The guy who designs the ecu has a mx5!
Any other suggestions for a tuner? Adaptronic website says dr drift or boi performance.. Though would like to hear from other mx5 people.

Hmm, chequered have tuned my mx5 with adaptronic about 4 times now. And about to go back to be tuned with the itbs fitted .
Also boi did the initial install on mine. Would not recommend them. (Nuff said)

Rus, how have you found Trent?
I tell everyone to go there, but he's never actually tuned my car
