Ben from DIY AUtoTune (that's MegaSquirt for those who didn't know) has a fix for the NB's "run away alternator induced damage" problem:

Re: NB owners: Alternator Issue - MUST READ
That is a new one on me. Heard of regulator problems on aftermarket ECU controlled alternators (NB8A only I think), which some ECUs have more difficulty with compared to others, but thought the internally regulated ones were as bullet-proof as alternators go. Also familiar with the earthing issues in these cars, and it looks like this problem is another permutation on that theme, aggravated by the effects of engine vibration on the alternator. Presumably this would also affect the NAs, weren't they internally regulated too?
I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)
