Recommend me a bluetooth single din headunit.

Postby SKYHI » Wed Feb 01, 2017 12:13 pm

Ok, so I know very little about car audio. Just looking for a simple bluetooth capable, single din headunit to put in my SE, so that I can play music from my Samsung Galaxy S6.

Any recommendations?

Thanks, Paul.

I got a mechless Sony one. No CD player in it so it's small and light. Works fine, sounds good and was <$90 from JBHIFI.

No bluetooth though, right?

They do have this pioneer unit for $134.

Yep, it has bluetooth.
I think it's this one, but they change so often it's hard to keep up:

Ah right, they don't seem to have that one listed on their website anymore.

They do have this unit for $132 though :)

Any of the Pioneer, Kenwood or Sony head units will work fine. Just get onto autobahn or super cheap websites and find the best priced unit that you like the look of.

I had a Pioneer Bluetooth unit in s14 that worked well and an older Pioneer iPod unit with CD in my old na6. Installation was easy for both, and they both made the expected noises.

This is what I currently have... http://www.kenwood.com/au/car/receiver/kdc-u7056dab/
I presume the model has been superseded. Originally installed 3 years ago. Paid $268.
BT auto connects in about 30 seconds. Very readable 3-line display.
Love the DAB+ radio but you would need a new aerial.
Front and rear USB ports, so whack a micro thumb drive in the front with the latest album you downloaded, or your driving playlists.
Rarely use the CD. Most of my listening is via the Pandora streaming function from my S6 (works flawlessly).
Good configuration and processing allows very respectable sound with headrest speakers.

30 seconds for Bluetooth connection sounds like BT 2.0 standard (excludes secure simple pairing feature), BlackLeaf.

I have used sony MEX-N4150BT headunit that has fast pairing with my 2+ yr old phone - pairs on average 3 seconds after accessories power on. Can place that call to your local takeout immediately after starting the car (before you take the long route there).

Sounds fine through the factory splits. Sony songPal app can control the headunit, read sms messages to you, you can play any audio stream, google maps provide navigation instructions etc all through Bluetooth connection. App crashes when phone runs low on memory, bluetooth streaming is not faultless, works well 99% of the time. Has CD player for vintage appeal.

It's for sale if anyone is interested.

That's the tricky bit! They all look awful.

The one I like best is the RetroSound
http://www.retrosoundusa.com.au/index.php?l=product_list&c=209

Lots of customisation options, looks retro, does BT, streaming, etc. Sorting a nice back facia would be the only tricky bit.

This is the older style unit, but it shows their single din facia.

The retro sound head units aren't cheap. I have one for my charger as it needs an old school radio. They are almost $500, so a little more than the $120 or so of the ones quoted. Plus the cheapies still look rightish in a NB interior.

Spend over $10k on a Nissan sr20det engine conversion and u won't need a stereo. Just listen to the boost wind up.

Thanks for your input guys.

I don't mind the retro look Lachy, but I think it would need a full retro interior to make it suit properly.

Think I'll just stick to something basic like the Sony unit I posted above.
