How can I get rid of it simply unplugging and tossing it in the trash doesn't work and causes the car not to start.
Any idea how I can properly remove this hunk?

Once you know which wires do what, they can be carefully removed and the remaining original cable join/splice insulated. If an original wire has been cut and joined to two different immobiliser wires, this original wire needs to be rejoined. There will be at least one behind the ignition that has been cut and joined to two separate cables from the immobiliser and it's this one that is stopping the car from being started. It's not a job to be rushed but it's pretty satisfying when you see the pile of cables and parts removed
