Custom Tombstone Control Panel

Postby madjak » Wed Feb 17, 2016 12:18 pm

I'm sick of all the various fuse boxes and wiring throughout the car so I'm going to progress my electrical system towards a full track car setup. Most of my stock wiring is now unused with the entire engine bay being controlled by the ECU and a separate loom.

I know enough about electrics to get myself into to a bit of trouble, so hopefully someone more knowledgable can chime in and tell me if I'm missing something.

My current setup looks like this:
Image

The entire tombstone front will be covered by a single carbon fiber panel that will be screwed into the outer edge of the tombstone. The top vents, hazard lights etc will all be removed and covered with the CF plate. The aim being that it will be nice and easy to remove if I need to check connections. here is the plan:

Image

My existing Nexus 7 tablet mount will bolt to the panel at the top and protrude up above the dash a little like the ND. This will bring it up into my peripheral vision.

First off I have a 6-pole master switch which will isolate the battery from everything. This will hook up to the alternator and starter via a firewall terminal. This will power the row of circuit breakers down the bottom. Everything that I can get away with will be wired without relays, except for Fuel pump, Fan, Pop up lights, head lights.

All the main electric systems will be switched with options to have the Fan and Fuel Pump be manually on, Auto or off. This will allow me to purge the fuel system, or force cool the car. I can also turn off the IGN and INJ when I want to check compression etc.

I'll make a second offset panel that will sit behind all this that will have all the secondary accessories like relays, and connectors. I'll also have some bus rails for Ground, 12v Power, 5v and Signal Ground so that it's easy to connect new sensors without cutting into existing lines.

Image

For all inputs and outputs from this panel I'll have a row of terminal connectors so that everything can be multi-metered and changed if required. It also means I can hook up additional lines quickly.

Through the firewall on the drivers side I'll connect to the engine loom via a Deutsch 29 pin firewall plug and I'll probably need a couple of other plugs for the chassis loom on each side.

Is there anything I have majorly wrong? No doubt I have something messed up that I'll figure out when wiring it all up, but is the general gist ok?

Seems like you have it worked out there. I have to admit i'm not an authority on auto electrical stuff but did manage to completely rewire my astina with little more than a painless kit, workshop manual supplement and narva catalogue. I could offer advice to use auto reset circuit breakers such as narva part no.#55610. They can fìt in place of standard blade fuses allowing you to use neat fuse boxes with integral bus bars. I used seperate fuse boxes powered by ign1, ign2 etc commands.

I'm not planning on using any blade fuses at all except maybe for the lights / indicators etc. All the main systems will be reset-able aircraft style circuit breakers that I can access in the drivers seat. I'm not sure if this is a great idea yet, but I've found a source of good quality ones for around $12.50 each. It's not milspec but the good ones run at around $40 each which is way above my budget of "as little as possible".

Does anyone think led lights on the circuits is a good idea to know if they are functioning? It adds lots of extra wire and I doubt it will be that useful.

Yes please on the panel, already thinking of this!

My plans would be to use resettable fuses like these Push Button Reset fuses http://www.12volt.com.au/redirect.html?a=/General%20Htmls/webcat2003/breakers.html. My plan would be to move almost all the electrical 'stuff' to the one point.

Another fuse place is here http://www.swe-check.com.au/pages/product_list_collection/1/4, they also do the distribution stuff as well.

Have a look at these for inspiration http://www.cartekmotorsport.com/pcp.html

You mean my dash shroud? I mistakenly bought a LHD dash shroud a couple of years back off ebay and it required some mods to fit as the profile is slightly different. The trim is just there to fill in a small gap. Since I had the full cage installed it never has fitted quite right and you can see it is lifted in the above photo. I need to bolt it down in a few more spots.
