ARGH! No High Beam!!!

Postby 4sfed5 » Fri Jul 11, 2014 4:53 pm

my JDM NA6 has no high beam lights...

if i unplug both headlights and measure voltage at the plugs i get 12V and the High beam indicator lamp lights up both when used in "flash to pass and normal high beam.

as soon as i plug in one head light.......nothing. no lights and no indicator... i even tried a new H4 lamp just to check.

any suggestions???
Low beams work fine and all other lighting ok.

I find a light spray of water and then cold gets 'high beam' working :)

Silly question do you have the test probe in the high beam circuit? If you have 12v then any 12v globe should work. I'm not sure if the dash light is independent of the high exam fuse you may need to check this.

Ok so after a lot of mucking afound ive traced it to the switch. it took me a while as i was trying to bypass the switch but couldnt find the power in... the high and low beam wires are on the white plug top right of the colum. the correct power feed in is on a small black plug bottom right thats hard to see. so just have to get the wheel off and see whats up with the switch.

Mazda BG 323s get this problem too. For those it turns out the electrical contacts in the combination switch need cleaning. Would be good idea to see if your tail lights are also lighting up when the headlights are on.

Yep, combination switch. There'll be voltage when you test it, but under load it will break down.

Replacement combination switch will resolve it.

i pulled apart the switch. lightly cleaned it with contact cleaner. Then bent the contact arms down just a fraction. lubed it all up with some tamiya grease :) and it all works fine now.

word for anyone attempting this: place a white towel or sheet on the table (the wife wont mind...trust me) so if you drop the teeeeeeny black "plungers" youll be able to find them again.
