Adaptronic 440 on NA6

hi there guys. I have bought a brand new universal 440 with loom for my BP powered astina but before risking the built engine i wanted to learn a little about the software etc on the comparatively cheap b6. so i loaded up the stock b6 map, selected the b6 timing settings and afm setting. plugged it in to a cold motor and crank and fuel but no correct spark, itll backfire when cranking ceases. clearly I've done something wrong in the ignition settings. timing is set on 14 degrees, not sure how this would affect it but i dont believe it should. can someone give some insight into what im doing wrong? they suggest running in full sequential but that would only improve performance, not prevent the car running as stock. it also asks to cut a wire which messes up the sensors (to do with fuel) during cranking. cut and made no difference...

I knew it wouldn't be plug and play as advertised ;)

Open your gauges window when cracking and that wire connected. If sensors don't go to ridiculous values that wire isn't the problem.

Have you checked your pin outs? B6 and bp ran slightly different pin outs

Oh and have you got the fuel pump relay sorted?

That wire is the fuel relay issue, does nothing visible or audible. Engine runs fine on stock ecu regardless of wire connected or not. So I don't think that's the issue. I think it's a cas or coil pack setup issue. The middle light flashes on the ecu (cas 2 input) while cranking but not the others.

I'd love to know what settings or wiring changes people have made on this ecu. There's nothing online specifically on others having issues.

I'm glad I'm not in a rush to sort this thankfully!

I could send you my file but it's for a bp running direct fire. Might help you start and idle the good engine to confirm?

Wiring changes I've done
Added ign 3 & 4, moved aux out 1, moved tach and added resistor, added Toyota COP. I think that was it. Oh an disconnected what ever wire it was that sends the sensors crazy on cranking (my temps would all go to like -30)

For memory we plugged it into plohls car with a standard b6 set up and it worked fine.

Have you confirmed all your pin outs are correct? Yes you should have cas 1 & 2 flashing from memory.

Why not try plugging it into the astina and just getting it to idle? Shouldn't be able to cause damage.

Injector size set right?

Appreciate the input. Astina is far from complete (needs custom fuel rail adaptor, custom radiator, intercooler and exhaust made up, and tps and dizzy wired... A seat and interior may help too... LOL.


I got it to actually run (while sounding like it had a massive cam/rotor) and puffing out lots of smoke. But it was with a random map from a 420 pnp model with custom settings for the ignition. Started on 3000 dwell and after changing to 5000, it ran smoother. Once it was warmed up I adjusted the ignition settings to b6 default and stalled immediately and would not fire once again even when reducing dwell to 3000... So clearly something is different in that table. I'm happy I got somewhere though, and will have another go tomorrow when my neighbors won't hate me. I'm running firmware v12 if that makes a difference too.

Shouldn't make a huge difference. Rather then put a dizzy in the astina but a CAS in and run COP ignition.

Lots of black smoke = too rich, maybe try taking the fuel map down? Was it running on 4 mine sounds like a hardcore wrx if it's only on 3.

I tried leaning out the 500 and 1000 cells alot. I tried advance and retarding the ignition in the same cells. Nothing made a noticeable difference. I think it's just running the injectors all the time or similar. Picking up a set of Toyota cops and have all the spare connectors to try a plug and play solution on this tonight. And yes then I'll use them on the astina.

You can test fire injector channels, have you tried firing them and see which injectors fire?

I haven't gone to the extent of removing them but I did an audible test and they all seemed to fire using the test buttons. Also picked up a set of Toyota cops and from what I've read it's an easy pnp setup with the spare connectors off another loom I have from an astina. Hopefully I can simply wire that up and see if I get a better result. No wasted efforts as it'll go on the astina anyway. (Pun intended)

Are they firing in the tight sequence though? As in are the pairs right? Is the right pair on the right channel.

I'm suspicious they're flipped 180* (coils that is) but no easy way to change that in the adaptronic afaik. I'll finish the wideband installation and then see what's going on with the coils... This was supposed to be a learning curve and it's not disappointing haha!

After a little more research it seems that It's far better to use the inbuilt MAP sensor rather than the MAF. maybe this is causing mega rich settings. on a more productive note, I've wired up the wideband and taken it for a drive (subsequently impossible to read in the sun!) but its running 13-14 on the stock ecu, and 10 on low rpm WOT! room for some improvement. almost finished soldering my PnP COP setup too. I'm hopeful that by the end of the day I'll get it to at least idle at 15.
