There is still a sender but instead of turning a cable, it sends a series of pluses that the speedo then uses to display your speed.

01 NB8B same as yours.
At first it was dropping out for a few seconds when accelerating then it would come back, but it's now progressed to the point where it can be gone for hours.
Had it up on the hoist last week and gearbox fluid is leaking from the sender itself so I'm fairly certain that's the problem.
Just need to find the time to swap it out.
HOLY sh*t!!!!
your scaring me man!!!!
I hope it doesn't cost over $500 to fix..

I suspect JT is referring to the sender unit. It should cost around $80 to replace.

Re: PLEASE HELP!! NB speedometer stopped!!!
Just got home from Mania, Service done and speedo fixed.
It was the speedo drive that was causing the problem. ($100 for the part + $20 labour to fit)
Thank you for all the advice given.

Glad it's all sorted!
Wish we still had a dedicated MX-5 workshop here in W.A.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Mine is still jumping around since I posted that thread. Do you happen to know the part number? I might order one and do it myself.

Re: PLEASE HELP!! NB speedometer stopped!!!
For those who have repaired the sender themselves (re-soldered the wires), roughly how many mL of tranny fluid leaks out when removing the sender??
I'm wanting to do this today as it's nice weather, and I can get the car up ramps giving me approximately +20 degrees lift so hoping little to no fluid comes out, don't have tranny fluid on hand either :S

Re: PLEASE HELP!! NB speedometer stopped!!!
My SE just started doing this too (que erry music )
Only stopped twice though. Once when I first started up and drove off one of the roughest trips on the Spirit of Tasmania, but then started working a few minutes later. Then the next morning, again working fine a few minutes later.
Could be a cold/temperature thing, but I'd be very keen to hear of anyone who has removed and repaired the unit (if possible?)
Don't know if anyone else had this, but I also noticed my Odometer/trip meter stopped ticking over too when the speedo was out. I havent pulled the dash to double check the plugs are in correct but if it happens again i'll turn on my OBD display and see if it displays speed at all. If that doesn't then the assumption would be that it is the sensor unit thing?

Nope, a sender, just like the NA
But instead of a cable coming out it has wires and a plug.
Drive gear is the same, just the output is different.

Yes same here, odometer stopped ticking over when the speedometer gauge goes off. Definitely noticeable when you switch to trip meter and don't see the 0.X meter move when I've dríven 3 blocks.
I was stopped at inspection stage of the revlimiter repair guide, as my NB8B has what looks to be a 6 point brace/metal cover over the gearbox! Not so easy reaching under there just on ramps, will need to get the car on a hoist or lift - one for the pros :/ Is that brace stock on NB8B? I will definitely have to check other mx5's out at a meet.

Found this simple and neat write up:

Will give this a go when I get a soldering iron and a bit of practice but looks straight forward

Re: PLEASE HELP!! NB speedometer stopped!!!
So fixed mine on the weekend.
Jack the car up and put it on stands from the rear only to avoid gearbox oil coming out.
I had to remove the bracing from around the cat to get to the sensor, only 6 screws.
This is the unit:
Once you have the unit out (only 1x bolt) cut back the green wax stuff and you'll see this:
Here i'v pushed the wires back onto the terminals but you can see theres a serious lack of solder.
Solder up the two wires and fill it with RTV silicone and put it back in.
Easy fixed ;)
