NB8B OBD2 indroduction

Hey there,

just trying to find out when the NB8B of 2002, became OBD 2 compliant?

Im looking to buy one tomorrow and Id prefer if the ecu was pre OBD 2 compliant, just due to fact that OBD is more emissions controlled programming i dont need or what on my vehicle.

From what I have read they say they were only introduced in the later 2002's.

Also could anyone tell me where in the drivers footwell I would find the OBD 2 plug?

Any response greatly appreciated :wink:

If you open the fuse panel near the drivers right knee and look at the top you'll find it.

Personally id much rather ODBII than not.

isnt obd 2 compliance the whole reason why the NB8C doesnt does quite output the same power figures as the NB8B? By being OBD compliant it then "adheres" to an governed emissions level and thus less power was made in the process. Thats been my presumption about the OBD 2 change. Anyone beg to differ?

for anyone else interested redbook lists the post October 2002 NB8B as having a slightly decreased power and touque output according to redbook and this is probably the time when the ECU's became compliant with OBD 2 and began to use the US Market ECU's in Australia. Glad Ive done some homework! I can now buy in confidence

It's such a negligible difference you're better off buying the newer car with OBDII (all else being like for like).

I'd take the power drop for obd2 personally. Means you can pull a lot of engine data far easier.

good point, its unfortunate though that its a compromise..

Does the OBD allow for any mapping?

The diagnostics would be handy though no doubt. Its just a shame that the ECU cant be reflashed

No mapping but there's some nice gauges that read directly from ODBII or software that logs your ODBII and overlays it on your track videos.

Newer is usually better, and i would definitely second that on the MX-5.
OBD2 is just more "compatible" - You'll be surprised at the new stuff coming out for OBD2 cars. Just plug-and-play!

Also, having a bluetooth adaptor along side a smart phone application is quite cool, you can see all the cars data.
(MX-5's don't, but some cars actually have a very limited control using OBD2).

Oh and NOV 02 model has the OBD2 connector port. (Can't confirm before that) - TBH I've never ran into an 02 model without an OBD2 port but the last one i can remember was an 02 (NOVEMBER) model.

Just in case anyone was wondering, I think it came in around half-way through 2002.

My OCT 2001 build (sold January 2002) certainly doesn't have OBDII.

^ Around about September. Based on the VIN mine was about 30-something off the production line of NB8C and it has OBDII, with a production date of September and an October compliance plate.
