Recently fitted a Clarion CX609A into my NA6 - chose that unit because was double din and no bling - very stock looking.
I used adapters to connect the radio - the Clarion came with a connector for the head unit with wires running out the back of this.
Purchased the requisite connectors so that I could insert the wires from the Clarion connector into the adapters and connect these directly into the existing harness connectors - no harness chopping and I can go back to stock radio or add another radio using the (now existing) adapters very easily.
There are adapters available (someone mentioned some on mx5parts.co.uk) that have harness connector at one end and ISO adapter at the other - if your radio has an ISO connection then this makes it even easier (no need to insert wires yourself in the adapter etc.). The Clarion I bought didn't have an ISO connection (used Clarions own 15/16 pin "standard") so this was not an option for me.
From memory I bought Areopro adapters - can't remember the numbers but think they were also for Ford models between around 1988-1998 (or thereabouts).
Plenty of info on the stock radio pinouts on miata.net that will help work out which wires are what in the harness end and help placements of the new radio wires in the adapters.
Should be similar process if your is not NA but NB.

Re: head unit wiring adapters
Bought the Clarion CX609A from Soundmaster - http://www.soundmaster.com.au/
Looks like the CX609A has been superseded by the CX501A (similar looking unit - channel selection buttons only visible difference).
The CX501A has a RRP of $499 - Soundmaster lists it at $359 - when I was looking for the CX609A Soundmaster had the cheapest price I could find (around $329 I think).
JB, Ryda, Strathfield etc. didn't seem to have much if any Clarion when I was looking.
If you are lucky you might find someone trying to clear old stock of the CX609A and maybe get a cheaper price.
p.s. just searched on eBay - there is a CX501 listed at $285 with free shipping - 4 available and 2 sold - seller appears to have sold lots of head units and good feedback - from Melbourne - only concern is that Clarion probably won't honour warranty for anything brought off ebay but the price is certainly tempting.
p.s. I have no affiliation with Clarion, Soundmaster, eBay or the eBay seller referred to - just trying to help out with info.
