Ok serious brains get in here-tach and pop ups questions :D

Postby NitroDann » Wed Aug 17, 2011 11:17 pm

Hey fellas,

If theres an auto thing that irks me its dash and under dash stuff.

Ive recently removed and refitted my dash.

Firstly NA6-1990

Ive done this my share of times and it all went smoothly. When I finally got the engine back in, Ive started it and found that my tacho isnt working, and my lights go up but dont coma back down.

Ok, so the tacho..
It goes like this..
Ignition on- Needle jumps up (it jumps to a specific spot but because Ive moved the needle Im not sure where to)
Running engine- It vibrates, but wont rev up.

Tests,
Ive removed the tacho completely from the cluster, and wired it to power and earth (diagnostics box) and the signal wired directly to the signal wire on the ignitor (blue/yellow). It does exactly what it did before. I did this to eliminate any chances I rubbed through or broke a wire in between.

If the serious electronics guys just say buy a new one, anyone know where to get a tacho alone for a good price?

And the pop ups.
They go up but not down.
Im just going to go ahead and call the retractor motor relay buggered right?
Again where do I get one? Cheap.
This one says B481 67 7COB
Relay-retra
Dc12V
IMASEN

Who knows why this is totally different to what all the manuals say, different to a mates na6 one, and under the dash?
Its black, about 60x30x30mm, and right next to the blinker module.

Ok one more question while Im here, who do I pm regarding an explanation of how resistor pull ups work, and just regular wire doesnt?

Thanks heaps,
Dann

Just for a track day you can wind the popups down manually. Knobs are beside the units ... have fun. Cheapest, quickest way to get a popup relay is from an Astina. It's the same unit and much easier to find. I make a habit of plundering them whenever I find an Astina rotting away.

Don't have one right now, just checked. Gave the last one away a few months ago. Came off a BG Astina in Beresfield. I can remember it's big and black with 12V and IMASEN and RETRA written on it but can't recall any codes. $10???

I know it sounds really simple but if the switch near the hazards that pops up the headlights isn't connected the headlights will come up but won't retract. You haven't just left that plug disconnected from the switch?

Nup.
Ive got a new relay coming tomorrow. Out of an astina (manga you legend!). Ill try that.

Past that, ill get some bike cables and rig a manual headlight pop up setup, save a few kilos where it counts :D

The ECU provides a pull-up for the tach signal. Geoff (sabretooth) had this problem when he fitted a standalone MegaSquirt system in his NA.

Ive got a seperate pull up fitted.
Its had an aftermarket ecu with a working tack for 2 years. Its just now the dash is back in it isnt working.

I think I may have shorted my shift light onto it, or just dropped it. Ill test another tacho tomorrow.

Currently have it completely removed and wired seperately like an aftermarket tacho, still isnt working right.

Its annoying as I cannot start the car much, I live on a quiet street and the car has no exhaust on it.

Got the flu and bronchitis this week. With all the dope some of my posts may have been ... errr ... erratic.

Somewhere before the bottle of mulled shiraz I recall that when you pull the plug out of the back of the instrument panel it's really easy to break a really fine little piece of circuit board metal that is the earth of the tacho. It sits above and behind the back of the little gauge to the left of the tacho (the fuel gauge?, sorry it's too cold wet and dark outside to go look and I'd fall over anyway). You'll need some serious fine soldering skills to fix it, bit of a mongrel actually. Sorry a bit vague, and maybe totally wrong, but ..... long time ago but I do remember that I swore I'd never remove the instrument panel again. Also if you go looking for it you'll make it worse.

Don't worry about the no exhaust though. Half the people in Newcastle couldn't give a sh*t about no exhaust. Lived there for 15 years. Full of hoons with no exhausts.

You guys are going to love this...

Dash back out, Wired tachos directly to the ignition, trying to pull power and earth from the diagnostics box.
Still no pop ups going down, and still no tacho...
So Out came the wiring diagrams, and with the dash out I followed all the wires along. My mate asked if the 'huge connector that leads to the engine bay on the left side of the dash' needed to be connected to anything.....

During my recent gutting of the dash, I had a whole section of loom (everything left of and below the hazards switch) disconnected and ziptied back to the firewall. This is for heater, fan, interior lights etc etc. Turns out One of the 15 odd plugs on it is part of the main loom and goes out the firewall far left.

I never even noticed it.... *facepalm*

:D
