Recently my car seemed to be using a lot of fuel according to the fuel gauge. I filled the tank up yesterday and checked the amount of fuel used and the distance travelled and the economy was actually quite good. When looking at the gauge I noticed that the needle only just managed to get to the bottom of the full blob. It used to go almost all the way to the F mark. I removed the instrument cluster hood and cleaned and tightened up all the contacts on the 3 plugs that connect to the back of the gauges and now the needle moves to the top of the full blob, almost touching the F. Problem solved.
