Odometer Settings

Hi all,

Looking at buying a 1999 instrument cluster for a clubman build. My engine is out of a 2002 with about 80K on it. Is there some way to reset the reading on the odometer to read 80,000 kms?

I'm pretty sure resetting odometers is illegal in every state in Australia.

So not sure how the guys who replace their dash (which includes a different odometer reading- usually with less - especially if they're from Japan) get around this. Considering if your previous pink slip had your car at say over 100k kms, then a year later you get a pink slip with 80k kms, might be some questions asked.

Your cars odometer is a record of how far the whole car has travelled not just the engine. It's illegal to change it just because you have fitted a new engine.

Having said that it's possible to change the odometer. My mate had to get a new instrument cluster fitted to his Audi S3 under warranty. Somehow the dealer managed to transfer the odometer reading to the new cluster. Maybe you could have a chat to a Mazda service centre?

just called mcgrath mazda at liverpool. they can't change the odometer reading. you'll have to go through the RTA (not sure what the procedures are)

it's basically a roadworthy check where a mechanic checks your vehicle for $30 before you register your car. the document they do the check on is pink.

I think one of my mates use to do this for race cars, I think he reprogrammed an eprom chip in the cluster.

Perhaps ring around MX-5 wreckers to find a dash with similar kms?

If your building a new clubman from scratch or kit, there won't be a problem.
If you want to match a replacement speedo, still legal, but you must supply old speedo to the instrument tech.
All the speedo's I've replaced with new units had to have the service book fitted with a sticker on the front cover, even if the new speedo was reset to original Kms. Thats keeps Office of Fair Trading happy.
