Hi,
Just wondering if anyone knows the size of the main speakers in the doors of a 99 NB30P1. I have the factory radio-cassette with the boot mounted 6 CD stacker, not sure if that makes a difference or not.
Thanks,
toymx5

The tweeters I can't give you an accurate measurement (although they do look like the 'standard' size for most tweeters), but the mid-range speakers are 5x7 items.
The door holes are actually suited for an "8 round speaker

Thanks break !!
You've saved me pulling the door trims off to check
I already have way to much bass and no mid range so I don't think I should go the 8'' route, I think that would make it even worse if possible ! Sounds like a I need a good quality set of 6.5'' dual range speakers. I might go check out some Alpines I think.
Thanks again,

If you aren't already a member, join your local MX-5 club. There should be some members who've upgraded the factory speakers. Then you can listen to the differences between the speakers before choosing which to buy.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Please do your ears a favor and avoid Alpine speakers (unless your forking out thousands for the over-priced F1 range).toymx5 wrote:I might go check out some Alpines I think.
Stick to Hertz, Boston, Focal and Rainbow speakers. You simply can't go wrong with any of those brands.

Ops ! A couple of mistakes in the above, I'll try again !
Okibi - Yes, I'm a new member of the Vic club. Thanks for the advice, makes good sense.
Break - Thanks for the warning about the Alpine speakers, my local shop does has Hertz so I'll check them out. Hopefully somone in the club will have some and I'll be able to have a listen actually fitted in a MX. One thing I don't quite understand is with splits if you replace the woofer as I know the large speaker, do you have to replace it with a woofer designed for splits or can you use a normal speaker like a dual cone ? I believe with splits the high frequencies are seperated and play through the tweeters so I assume only the mid range and low frequencies play through the woofers so should you stick with a woofer designed to play just those ? Any thoughts

While not great, I always thought the type S Alpine stuff was decent for its price. There are better options around for similar money for the rest of their range though.
Most important thing you can do toymx5 is shop around and actually listen to things until you find something you like. Your ears will do the best job of telling you what you like, so take a cd you're familiar with (something you'd normally listen to) and find out for yourself.
Any decent set of splits will come with its own set of crossovers. They separate the frequencies between the woofer and the tweeter for you.
You can replace just the woofer with a 2/3 way speaker (2 or 3 speakers in one) but they typically aren't as good as their equalivilent split systems. You're basically sacrificing sound quality for ease of install.
