I've had no experience with those particular speakers but adding an amp to any system will improve things. I was running the stock speakers when I first installed my amp and the amp really helped them along.

As far as fitting goes, no matter what speakers you choose you should try to waterproof the rear of the speakers. The MX5 door cavity gets very wet. You will notice that the stock speakers fit into a plastic shroud to keep them dry.

1: Why 8" speakers? They will require lots of work to fit and won't sound very good as full range speakers.
2: I would be careful regarding American Boss. I've only ever seen/heard bad things about their products.
3: Don't buy any speakers without listening to them first. Other peoples opinions can help but go and listen to stuff yourself. Your ears will tell you what you do and don't like.

Hows that? Both sets of 8" speakers I've used took 5 minutes to fit. Unscrew old speaker with plastic housing still attached, attach new speaker using the same screws in the same holes as the plastic housing, refit door card, enjoy.

Well actually it was a little bit more work. I had to install the new crossovers, manufacture a water shield and add some dynomat type product to the door. But fitting any size other than a slim 5*7" or an 8" would have been a lot more work.

well the reason is... 8 inch is as big as you can go, so why not.. it should sound better than stockies... and the biggest pro is that i bought it for $4.55

if it does not sound good i will put it on my gfs car

I got these about a year ago.

For the price, can't beat 'em. Decent sound, decent bass. Nothing special, but sure worth the $. Definitely use an amp.

Fit perfectly into the 8" hole in a 99/00. I used the same splits too. You'll need a bit of dampening in the doors though, these things push and shove a bit.
