Which way to go, 6X8 or 6.5 inch splits?

I was using the VDO speakers before I got my Clearwater speakers BD. They sounded OK with a bit of \"tuning\", a big improvement in clarity over the stock jobbies. If you are intending to use the Mazda tweeters the setup would probably sound a lot better if you fitted a crossover like Okibi has done to his Pioneers. I found the midrange to be a bit harsh but everyone's ears are different.

I dropped a pair of polk splits on the doors, and kenwood 7x10\" in the parcel shelf, between the gully for the fuel tank, it cranks.

If you want splits with some SERIOUS bottom end, then look no further then the Rainbow CS275.27 Power.

These are NOT cheap (not in the slightest) and their bottom end capabilities do lead to a tad of a sacrifice in midrange (still better then many speakers though)...however for sheer bottom end capabilities from a compact diameter midbass I've not heard anything like it.

The midbass from the set is a 7\" with a 96mm mounting depth. The depth causes issues for pretty much any car out there - except an MX5

The tweeter from the set is also quite nice - not as good as the Scans I owned in my last install, but defiantely the next best I've owned. The crossovers are also of a high quality.

Downside? I'm not sure how much they cost, but last time I checked they retailed at around $1,400 for the full set...it may well have gone up since then.

Otherwise for a nother option on a downscaled budget, try Digital Designs splits using the DDW6.5 midbass. From my modelling experiements, it seems to have comparable bottom end extension to the Rainbow, but doesn't seem to need as much volume to achieve it. It likely won't play quite as cleanly, and the build quality isn't quite as good, but none-the-less it's an option if you want powerful bottom end.

If are more in hunt for good midrange, then check out Focal 165K2P - these babies are absolute gems, and arguably the best sounding 'car audio' speaker I've yet heard. Very well ballanced and extremely neutral, with only the slightest of colouration in the high's and otherwise very neutral. Also, better bottom end then most speakers of that size. They retail for around $849 a set.
