I think you'll find the 02 still use cables and levers like old fashioned cars, mine does. Check for a broken cable or maybe one of the cable outer casings has unattached itself from one of it's mounts?

I'm with Garry. My NB8A is all done with cables and levers and whatnot. Take off the centre console (there are guides on here and on miata.net) and just have a poke around behind the dials. It should all be very visible and you'll be able to see what's going on. If it's not immediately visible, being mechanically minded might come in handy to trace the source of the failure.
