The Putty Road

Calling NSW forumites
I have heard of (but not dríven) the Putty Road I believe it is an ideal road for MX5s but I was wondering if you save much time by using it and bypassing Newcastle

Its a fantastic road.
not sure if it saves time. all depends what direction you are comming from & where you are trying to get to.

My wife is currently driving down the New England Highway from Brisbane (heading to Melbourne). The map indicates that you bypass Newcastle and a sizable chunk of Sydney but I imaging the twists would slow you a little (GLW is not a hard driver)

Tell her to avoid dawn / dusk times on the putty, plenty of animals to turn into hood ornaments...

Caffeine - Tks for the advice. She will be leaving Tamworth in the morning so it will take a little time to get to Singleton and hopefully the prospective hood ornaments will be resting!

GLW had a great run. Good surface, virtually no trafic (appart from a Camry on the wrong side of the road), plenty to keep the driver occupied and some terrific scenery (if you are into that sort of thing!)
Her only suggestion was to have a pit stop before you start as there a few places to \"stop\" along the road

The Putty rd is a great run. Go up F3, turn off at Peats Ridge drive through to Wollombi and then Broke (short dirt stretch) then through to the start of Putty Rd. No cops, lotsa fun and finish at Windsor.

Had many a good drive along this road. Certainly one of the best ways into the Hunter Valley from Sydney. Going through there earlier this year I passed Motor testing the R32 Golf, S3 Audi and new STi.

Went for a relaxing Sunday drive with few mates through putty road and what an awesome drive it was.

It was freezing with top down but with heater on full blast everything was a-ok

Since I'm on the north side just wondering of thoughts on this route

Hornsby -> galtson road -> mid dural -> old northern rd -> wisemans -> St albans road -> wallambine st -> mogo creek road -> wise mans ferry rd -> great north road -> Paynes crossing road -> broke -> broke mount thorny road -> putty road --> windsor

Hey Zohxoco,

I literally drove this route just this Sunday.

I was going to go on the full putty road path but one of my mates had to leave early so we modified the route. My only concern was most parts of wisemans ferry road had no lines and it became a bit dangerous when you have blind right turns at anything over 80kms.

P.S. They don't even have suggested speed signs around bends... so it's all up to you to be the judge.
