Great Ocean Road

I am somewhat surprised that it isn't here already but the Great Ocean Road has to be the best twisty road in the country. I have drĂven the Black Spur, Reefton Spur and various roads through the Dandenong's and Yarra Valley, but I am always up for a GOR run.
If you want to avoid traffic try starting it at 4am. Did this last summer when I couldn't fall asleep at a friends holiday house in Lorne. Had an unbelievable high speed run with no traffic.
At around 6am I started seeing various high end sports cars (Porsches, Westfields, Lotus's and M-Technic BMW's) out on the road having fun before the family sedans took over the road.

The GOR isa great road used to do it nearly every weekend chasing the surf, but I live in WA now and I didn't have an MX5 then.
What a pity!

It is really good at the moment after a fair bit of resurfacing.
Woke early last Sat. and did an hour and fifteen minutes Geelong to Apollo Bay leaving at 6am.( bought my partner a birthday present at the Sat market,had a quick bite at AB bakery and home through Forrest by 9.00am.)
Only passed one car going the same way between Lorne-AB.Never went really quick as the NA lights are only just, but it is just magic when you get good run like this.
Interstaters have GOT to get on this road early and have fun.Return and do the sightseeing bit later but stay close by and enjoy the whole experience, say 2 hours fifteen,easy but quick,Geelong to Port Campbell.

My #1 co-driver and i did Sydney -> Adelaide -> Melbourne -> Sydney over XMAS/New Year, 2004
http://forum.altezzaclub.org.au/index.p ... f=30&t=754After hearing so much about the GOR, I was impressed. For smile per mile, i would say the Old Pac Hwy north of Sydney offers as much fun, but it's nowhere near as long, doesn't have the views, and does have the blues.
We took our time, staying in Apollo Bay and Lorne on the way through, but being holiday season, there was plenty of stopping and waiting to get a good stretch. I loved the section through the National Park coming into Apollo Bay; in fact, we found some great driving all around that area.
The Adelaide hills don't seem to get much of a mention around here, though - some very entertaining driving around there, and all 10 minutes from the CBD. Lucky buggers.
I'm keen to head back down for another go at the GOR, now that it's apparently been resurfaced?

I do think the GOR is very overrated! Much better variety of roads through the hills round Adelaide with less traffic and better views. The GOR is great in patches, but seperated by pretty dull sections, IMHO.

You just drove it at the wrong time, try driving it early morning & not on school holidays.
Don't know about the views, you may be right, but I have only been to SA once and can't remember anything of note.
