215/45/17 run fine on 7s. Plenty of manufacturers run them like this from factory.
You will find that the majority of 215s are cheaper than their 205 counterparts as well.

Hankook recommends 7" as the ideal size for the 215/45/17 RS3, where as they recommend 7.5" as ideal for the 215/45/17 VentusTD and like Luke says, most 215's are cheaper than 205's and generally there are more tyre choices. An added bonus is the 4.5mm increase in tyre radius, which slightly increases the cars actual speed at any indicated speed and makes the wheel gap slightly smaller in the wheel well for a more sporty/less 4WD look.

Any therefore makes the speedo more accurate than it was from the factory.....

Still set the cruise control at 120km/h indicated and have dríven past many NSW highway patrol cars without any drama (glad I'm not a Victorian).

Yep, you'd get locked up for being a dangerous criminal for doing 20kmh over in the nanny state..
I know of one Victorian, who shall remain nameless, that has had his licence suspended twice, both times for being just 1 (one!) kmh over the maximum speed cutoff.

We are governed by FWITs. Most people are logical and sensible, right up till you install them in a bureaucracy and give them a little authority. Then they just keep trying to justify their existence. Funny how some uniforms try to mimmick the SS and Gestapo uniform look. Same with wording, 'Service' has been replaced with 'Force'.

What's the cutoff?

In a 110 zone, clearly higher than 120 indicated on 215's. Once I went by a patrol car at 125 indicated, still nothing. Here's hoping we don't become as stupid as Victoria. Oh and by the way- 'Go the Blues'.

Check your speedo against a gps. My NB with 195/50 R 15 Kumhos and 4.1 final drive is spot on. With 4.3 final drive is 10% fast.
My NC with 215/45 R17 Michelin is 3% fast. I haven't checked with the 215/45 r 17 Hankook Ventus TD but it is sure to be different.
Different manufacturers and different tyre models with the same manuf' will all be different, the 'size' is nominal.

As for 205 or 215 on 7", it will depend on the tyre make and model. Check tyre manuf' recomendation.

So he was doing at least 121 in a 110 zone, and was caught at least twice?

What's the cutoff?
30kmh over when susp kicks in.
Both times were 131 in a 100 zone on a sunny day on a 4 lane freeway with no traffic.
130kmh is a fine, 131kmh is loss of licence. Despite polite conversation and respect towards officer, neither was interested in writing it up as 130 so was just a fine rather than walking for a month..

Surely he'd take it on the chin for being 31% over?

He'd cop a fine on the chin for being 30kmh over. Stiff to cop a suspension for being 1kmh faster than that...

People will always have their own opinions on what's fair.
