Tyre Age Warning
Here is yet another example and explanation of why tyres should be replaced due age and not just wear. http://qmsc.org.au/images/pdfs/e-bulletin/2014-11-28-e-bulletin24.pdf

Re: Tyre Age Warning
So aware of that
Sold a 2003 Corolla Sportivo back in 2012, 32,600km on the clock and tyres had lots left in them - roadworthy showed they were perished, failed inspection, I replaced and new owner met me half way with the cost [I didn't ask him to]
Something to always remember!

I'm skeptical and suspicious about that article and the photo in particular. Looks to me like a retreaded tyre. I reckon I can see the buff mark of the retreading process, just below the tread on the sidewall too.
Climate and direct sun exposure can have a big effect on how a tyre ages.

^ Yeh, I originally wasn't going to say anything but I felt like something was a bit off too, particularly the lack of details around the tyres in question.
The writer goes to the difficulty of explaining that he has 8 year old tyres on his own car but doesn't say how old the ones on the car that had a tyre failure were..
Saying that though it has a good message particularly for the classics guys who I guess this is targeted to since they often want to run older 'period-correct' tyres on their cars and maybe he intentionally glossed over some of the details so the story didn't lose what it set out to achieve which is to make people check their tyres and consider replacing them.

Re: Tyre Age Warning
That is true. I didn't think of that. Age tends to effect the sidewall moreso than the treads do to exposure to sun/elements. Interesting food for thought.

Re: Tyre Age Warning
No, that is a tyre delaminating due to a failure in the tread not due to being a retread.
I have had it happen to me many years ago with an R spec tyre due to an alignment issue, and at one stage a couple of years ago there was a spate of delaminations with, I believe it was, Khumos, but I could be wrong on the brand.
I have also trashed some old road tyres and had then delaminate, but that was through abuse rather than age.

Re: Tyre Age Warning
Have 8 yr. old tyres on rear, less than half used but concerned about age. Three tyre dealers assured me they were fine and you'd think they wanted to push me to new ones. Their criterion was based on tiny surface cracks and mine were fine as car is kept underground and under a cover.

Silvi,
Two years ago something prompted you to consider new tyres. Now they are eight years old.
Greg.

Re: Tyre Age Warning
Consider the size of the contact patch and that multiplied by four is all that keeps your car doing what it does, have you ever enjoyed old, dry Salami?
Silvi,
Bridgestone did revise their range in mid 2011, look at the RE 002'S.
Let me know how you get on.

Well old tyres are even worse, & could result in you losing your rear end as well!

Re: Tyre Age Warning
Dilemma! 3 tyre co. experts examine tyres and give them the thumbs up ok.
Forum guys say no good without inspections...
See the problem?
