Dunno about the brands but the sizing raises the following (taken from
http://tire-size-conversion.com/tyre-size-calculator/)
215/40-17 is
4.8% wider and
5% taller (in the sidewall) that the 205/40-17
Overall diameter has increased by
1.8% which is approximately
1km/h faster at 100km/h than the 205/40-17
215/40-17 is
4.8% wider and
18% taller (in the sidewall) that the 205/40-17
Overall diameter has increased by
4.7% which is approximately
4km/h faster at 100km/h than the 205/40-17
The extra sidewall height that the 215's have over the stock 205 may lead to a decrease in high speed bump harshness?
(by high speed, I mean the shape of the bump, and not the speed of the car)
also (as others may not be aware) each brand may have the same indicated tyre sizing, but may widths and heights differ significantly.
Curious to see what size and brand you go with.

215s made my speedo exactly accurate according to my gps. Didn't notice any difference in ride compared with 205s but I did go from no-name Chinese tyres to better ones and stopped spending half my working life on dirt roads. Mind you, I also don't feel much difference with the 15s presently on the car so maybe I'm just bad at telling the difference?
PS Don't you hate the spell checker highlighting the correct spelling of tyres?

Been interesting ringing around for info seems the independent tyre company's that supply
gray imports are
VERY reluctant to give the tyres manufactured date and they try to avoid the subject. Where as the Bob Jane's ect that deal with Australian tyre importers such as Yokohama Australia are more than willing to give the manufactured date . Funny enough Im starting to look at Kumho 31 205/40 R17 choice is not just on price but excellent feed back .

i've never had an issue with grey imported tyres. they come from the same factory. and that factory like to move old stock out. they dont care whom the buyer is.
if you are going for a huge irregular size, sure you might end up with a old tyre. but 205/40R17s hac been common since the late 90s.
both my last 2 purchases of 215/35R18s KU31s have been through those cheapo sydney online sellers grey importers dudes, and both times the tyre has been less than a year old once i recieved them. best was only 5 months old.
but you need to buy where you feel comfortable. personally if i was sell tyres for half the price from anywhere else, then i'd fob anyone off also that wanted me to go into the back and check date stamps. but then you pay for what you get. if you want a bit more service, then pay a bit more for it.
if you can get KU31s, then buy them up, cos most likely the last time you'll be able to get them.
to the op - 215/45R17s are way too big.

Thanks everyone for there feed back . I purchased a set of Pirelli P Zero Nero 205 40 17 only wish I had done so 18 months ago .The Toyo's still had over 1/2 thread but were near to 6 years old and getting a little hard and didn't like cold damp mornings
. It took a lot of ringing around to find a matching set the 4 I purchased were all made 1st month 2014 during my trips to grey importers I found tyers up to 4 years old . Was very happy with Bob Jane the set cost me $720 and are backed by Pirelli Australia just in case something goes wrong . WOW these stick like baby poo to a blanket very happy chappy
