What are the pros and cons of getting rid of them?

For a track car where you aren't concerned about stone chips from gravel thrown up off the tyres, get rid of them as it is extra weight and you score a little more clearance. If you want to keep your guards looking good on a road car then keep them as they protect the underside of the guard from all the crap thrown up off the tyres.

Also, noise. Stones are less noisy on plastic than they are on metal bits.

I'm missing the front ones, and you'd be surprised how much crap they keep off the back of the foglight housing & connection...

Seriously though: Rust.

All the gravel over time will sand back the paint/protective layer on the underside of the guards. (Must get onto replacing mine quick smart!)

Brake ducts where fog lights would be.

See what you mean about the rust and what others say about dings from gravel etc.

I'm just tired of the cheapo fixings falling out and the liners hitting the tyres.

Reminds me Hellmun's unlined guards which now resemble a cheese grater after having gone through a gravel trap at Phillip Island!

on some cars you'll find wiring in there also.
