[QLD] A place that does economical rear bearing replacement?

Hi,

After bashing out the shaft spline from my existing knuckle, I think the bearing has taken a beating and isn't sounding too good. When you rotate the hub you can hear bearings or metal grinding. There is no play, but it sounds different to the other side that was easily removed from the spline.

Does anyone know of a place that will do rear bearing replacement for small amount of $$.

I checked a local brake and bearing place and they wanted $150 parts and labor for each wheel!

That seemed a little high considering it is just a simple press it out and press it in job. Bearings look to be about $75 per side, so maybe not much better but wanted to ask before I just go and blow $$ on something that can be had elsewhere for less.

Maybe I should inquire about a 2nd hand hub and knuckle - it might be cheaper to just replace it !?

I recently paid $104 from an NA half shaft to be pressed out of a rear hudb, and the new bearing to be pressed in (I supplied the bearing.

Getting the shaft out was probably the hardest part, you don't need a press you can replace the bearing in a vice with a socket and cold chisel (don't forget that you need to get the race off the hub as well as press the bearing out of the knuckle).

You could try the brake shop again at knock off time with the bearing and a carton, this tends to work quite well.

I would do it for you if you get a bearing, I could even take it to work and use a press if it makes you feel better.
