Looking for egineering shop to seperate shaft from rear hub

As per another thread, I am needing to replace a rear wheel bearing. I have removed the rear hub and half shaft from the car, however I have been unable to seperate the two. The half shaft splines are well and truly seized in the hub. I have sprayed WB40, and home made penetration fluid, and hit the end of the shaft with a nice solid hammer to no avail (I had the old hub nut on the end of the shaft when using the hammer)

Therefore I am seeking the services of an engineering shop or someone with access to a heavy duty press in the SE Suburbs of Melb, or near the CBD.

most workshops have presses. Try one of the brake places like ABS as an example or a shop that does suspensions- they are in most suburbs. Its pretty straightforward for mechanics to strike these probs so just knock on a few doors in your local industrial estate.

Jeff, don't know for sure, but would think Lucas at Lucas Automotive, 92 Levanswell Rd, Moorabbin, Ph: 9553 3995, could do it. He's heavily into rallying & does all the work on his rally car. Also Dean at Motorsport Essentials, 29E Glenvale Cres, Mulgrave, Ph: 9562 1005, could probably do it.

I carefully used a two foot crowbar to remove hub & axle when replacing the rear wheel bearing in the clubbie's Escort diff - worked a treat instead of a slide hammer, which I didn't have.

....or you could buy one of these if you do them regularly. Just remember to lube the end of the driveshaft... :mrgreen:

Have you tried heating it and cooling it?

heating is often the answer but it then comes down to heating with what and does it represent a risk. Seriously this is not big ask. Brake and suspension places are removing these things everyday some on trucks and challenging situations.

I've not tried to heat it as I don't have the necessary equip. Also as I have been used acetone I not keen on putting any flame/heat too close.

I have contacted a local tyre/auto service business and they believe they can do it......fingers crossed.

Update.

Took the half shaft and hub, and new bearing/seal/hub nut to my local Goodyear Tyre and Auto franchise (formerly Harrison Holden dealer in Chelsea Vic). They pressed the half shaft out of the hub and fitted the new bear/seal/hub nut. I was charged for an hour of labour. Cost me $104.

I refitted the half shaft/rear hub after work. I just need to whip out the Warren and Brown and torque up the hub nut and away we go.

Re: heating teh bolts etc, Bunnings sell Butane blow torches for about $40

They do an OK job for their price, it can't melt metal, but it's enough to get a good amount of heat to help crack loctite and stuff.

The MAP gas ones are much better (higher heat) but also cost a fair bit more.
