Need new rear wheel bearing - CBC or MX5 parts UK?

Postby aka_juffa » Mon Jan 07, 2013 9:04 am

Hey all,

Happy New Year.

I need to replace one of the rear wheel bearings. I am aware that CBC have a bearing kit available, as does MX5parts in the UK. From what I understand the CBC kit is good quality. Does anyone have any experience with the kit from MX5parts?

CBC all the way Jeff, they use Timken, NTN, etc quality manufacturers. No need to pay any extra for shipping around the world for something that may very likely come from the same factory or perhaps of even lesser quality.

Thanks for the responses.

Have just spoken to CBC (Braeside Melb) and they have the rear bearing kit in stock.

For future reference;

Rear wheel Kit (Bearing and seal) - $68.20

Front wheel kit (Complete hub, with wheel studs) - $107.80

The rear wheel kit does not include the hub nut, nor the circlip that the MX5Parts UK kit includes.

How did that compare once you factor in shipping etc.?

There is only a few cents difference either way, depending on exchange rates. Also if I buy locally I can get the parts right away and get the car back on the road ASAP.

Plus if there's an issue you can simply contact CBC and say "it's dodgy" and they can help right away rather than "sure, wait another few weeks for a part"

Yup cause they know if they give you bad service you'll simply go down the road to Allied Bearings. There's little sense ordering something from the other side of world when a local source is just as good if not better.

Breaking news.
Just got of the phone with CBC regarding buying a bearing grease packer as my packing skills are somewhat lacking.

They informed me that I didn't need a packer for 2 reasons;

1. The MX-5 rear bearings are not tapered and therefore the regular type of packer will not work.
2. The MX-5 rear bearings come pre-packed with grease :D

I have had to order a new hub nut from Mazda at $13 as the CBC kit does not come with one, and my old one is in poor condition. So the overall cost is now around $13 more than the MX5PARTS UK kit.

$13 is nothing when you are supporting local industry.

That comment "supporting local industry" is becoming less relevant everyday as we become a global economy with the power to buy/sell anywhere. But keep holding onto that dream. I'm getting better/friendlier service online than in person these days. Sad but true.

Then the local industry will be building weapons and supporting troops. Local industry will cave and collapse as it often does when fighting wars.
