Do these wheels fit?

Postby Duane » Wed Feb 29, 2012 6:28 pm

I have 2 sets of these wheels that I use on the Elise, one with AD08s and the other with V70Aa.

What I'd like to know is will they or are they likely to fit on an MX5.
Might save me shelling out on wheels and race rubber for the short term. Eventually I will get new rims for whichever MX I end up with soon for semis and wets.

Rota Torque
F=16x7 27mm offset 205/45/16 (approx 590mm high)
R=17x8 35mm offset 225/45/17 (approx 630mm high)
4x100 with 56.7mm hub bore size.

Not worried about the legalities, just if they might fit. (I know the f/r bias may upset abs)

Cheers.

They have the same number of studs and stud PCD (4x100), but the centre bore is different (NA and NB mx5s are 54.1mm). You'll need to run hub adapters to use them safely. 8.1kg (18lbs) is pretty heavy as well; the 15" wheels that came with the NB8A weigh just under 6kg per corner, and 15x8 6ULs are 5.4kg.

It's generally regarded that 15" is the sweet spot for mx5s. 17s have been run, but they tend to dramatically change the feel of the car (and not for the better). My 1991 NA6 feels much better on 15s than 16s.

Cheers, just trying to be a tigharse. I should know better. Yes they are very heavy, but they cost me under $1K for 2 sets.

Guess I'll be in the market for some rims shortly then.

I don't understand why you would buy such crap wheels for a Lotus let alone an MX5 either, i simply don't understand why people buy heavier and far inferior wheels for their cars.

Unless aftermarket wheels look better and weigh less why would you bother?

........I just don't get it.

Standard Elise wheels believe it or not are heavy and narrow.
Front wheel is 16"x5.5" which seriously limits tyre choice and amazingly its a kg heavier than the cheaparse rotas.
At the time it was a cheap way to get wider stickier tyres without at least adding weight even if no weight was saved.
I'll accept a bit of flaming from you lot as its hard for you to make acurate comments when you know f'all about Elises just as I know even less about MX5s.

Your'e right Dann, I see I'm going to cop it here :D, probably even worse from the toffs on the Lotus forum for bying a MX5. You guys will just have to steer me in the right direction so I can beat them on the track and wipe their smiles off.

I'm just curious about the hate on Rotas. Why? Because they are not "branded" or made in a low cost Asian country?

Because they are seen as a knock of brand. Have also been claims of heavy and weak.

I say claim because I've never personally looked into it.

Ok wtf... I just thought it was funny that cheap wheels were going on a pricey car. I don't know why everyone else decided to be dicks about it. Plus everyone knows the Elise is the better car :lol:

Even you can't deny a stock Elise/Exige would thrash a stock mx5.
