Tyres for MX5 SE..

Hi,

I am looking for tyres in following size to replace my crappy tyres that are on my SE right now.
After doing some reading/research - I am leaning more toward 215/40/17 (OEM is 205/40/17) and I think more tyre options with this size.

I have been quoted Federals RSR for $218 a corner.. is this too much? Or can you recommend a place near Sydney?
Will consider other brands as well but would like to be semi and around $150

also search tirerack.com for alternatives and pricing. Even if you don't buy there, you can get a size and make and source locally.

I'm still a fan of the Bridgestone Adrenalines, great road tyre, I didn't get too many kms out of the last set on the people mover but I got a lot value for money in terms of enjoying the cars handling with them so I bought another set.

I just bought some Yokohama S Drives. I just rang around got the best priced, rang my local Bon Jane and they match the price. $248 a corner. Very grippy tyres and would recommend these to anyone. At eastern creek today they were brilliant. Could not have asked for more.

i don't think you are going to get anything that is a semi slick for 150 a corner in any tyre size if that is what you mean by semi.

the RSR is not a semi slick either. its in the UHP category, not a competition tyre.

bang for buck consider Re001 (japanese made only), KU31 etc if that is your price bracket.

Good luck though, the RSR seems good value at what you have been quoted.

$248 a corner - OUCH!

Best thing to do with an SE/MSM on OEM 17" rims is to upgrade to 15" rims, much more cost-effective in the long run AND you get a better ride, both on and off the track.

Whoever decided to put 17" rims on the SE/MSM needs to endure a kick in the 'nads from every SE/MSM owner!

I know, I have read so many other threads and many other forums that I got confused.... :frown:

I think I have come to conslusion..
I will not get semi slick for the stock RHs. It's gonna be either RE002 or KU31...
I can get KU31 from Tempe 140 each fitted
and RE002 from Costco for 225 each fitted, can get extra discount with their promotion thats going on right now,
Based on my budget this month..

Will definately get a set of 15s..

Don't bother with KU31. re002 is another level and I'd recommend them.

And I agree with Loki; you'll be much more impressed with better tyres in a 15" rim. I just bought a set of re002's for $135 per corner!

I don't know if they are in the correct sizes for you but if you are not after a race tyre I'm very happy to recommend Dunlop star specs or Yokohama AD08s for fast road use.
For r specs I wouldn't go past DZ03s or V70As.

DemonTweeks(uk) are reasonably priced and cheaper than tirerack for freight.
Saved $600 on my last set of V70As compared to locally.

I got some Stypes for a mate a while back and they were $218 for 16's and $165 for 195/50 x15'. I have them and am very happy although after about 25000klms and 5 years(years probably more important) they have got a bit slippery in the wet. Great when new though.
Sourced KU31's in 15 for $105.and 205/45x17 S drives for my previous NC at $235 fitted about 12 months ago.

All prices fitted and balanced.

Seems the Toyo and Kumho prices are pretty close. One mob on EBay are saying"better than Kumho" in their ads.

I was going to get a set of KU31's in 16" for the NB but is there a better Toyo choice maybe for "fast street" driving and good wet handling ?

Toyo and Kumho, while different companies, do tend to sell within the same market.

I tend to be a Toyo fan, they're a great middle ground between performance and price.

I've got Proxes4 on my MX and love them, my Mondeo had Proxes4 as well a couple of years back (in 215/45/17) and they were great tyres in most conditions.

I'm in the same position for my 17' enkei wheels. I really wanted Ku36 but doesn't come in that size, I wanted a 'street legal semi' but not sure about paying the earth for the yokos.

I agree though the re002 is great I have them on my stock 16' wheels.
