Tire wear?

Hey guys,

I've just pulled a set of 18" rims off and replaced them with lightweight 15", the rear wheels though had significant tire wear on the inside. The NB is just a daily driver, not track work or anything, so can the rear wheels be adjusted to get normal wear out of the tires? Is this just an alignment or should I be asking pedders to be doning something else?

Many factors involved, i'm not an expert but the rims might not have been rotated during there lifetime, negative camber could also contribute to the inside rubbing out early an alignment can help reduce this, not sure if there is other factors though.

Wearing the inside of the tyres indicates you have too much negative camber for the sort of driving you are doing.

MX5s are designed so that you can very accurately adjust camber and toe on the rear wheels and camber, toe and castor on the front wheels. The adjustment range available is pretty big. So you should be able to get an alignment that gives even wear right across all tyres.

Good alignment also dramatically improves the handling and feel of the car but doing an MX5 alignment well needs a lot more than the average skillset. You need to find a good sports car suspension shop with MX5 experience, not just any old tyre or shocks place. People on this forum know where all the good alignment shops are. Good shops are not usually more expensive than bad shops. Just let us know where you live and someone will point you to the best local one.

or too much toe out. depends on the inner wear. it it is only the inner shoulder that is wearing, then toe related. if it is the inner 50% of the tread, then it is camber related. run 0 toe and 1 negetive camber, and the tyres will last forever...
