Shanked wheelnuts - how do I know what I need?

I've almost bought a new set of wheels and from talks with someone who owned a set in the past it appears that I need to buy a set of shanked wheelnuts to use them (as opposed to the stock tapered nuts)

anyway, since I've never used shanked nuts, how do I know which to buy?

http://www.mcgard.com/Applications/Auto ... 0ucQ%3d%3d

there's a few different sizes there.

I presume I need the shank size to match the hole size (duh), but what about length? do I need the shank length to be slightly shorter than the wheel width or something?

ok, apparently I need special Rays nuts, they are shanked AND have a taper.

anyway, what's the stud pitch/thread of an NB?

1.25 or 1.5 ?

If these are for the Volks rims, then you can avoid the need for special (read expensive) Rays nuts and just get the wheels seats machined.

Most of my wheels have about 7-8mm of wheel nut seat depth, whereas the Volks rims had more like 15mm, meaning most nuts only got about 3-4 turns before they were tight, and therefore the need for Rays style nuts.

I had the rim seats machined so they now only have 8mm of seat depth and the nuts will now have about 9-10 turns before they pull up tight.

Now if I ever lose a wheel nut in the future its only $2 at any wheel shop rather than $180 for a new set from japan.
Also can use the same nuts for all my wheels rather than carry multiple sets of nuts for the multiple sets of wheels..

thanks for the tip Rascal.

ok, just got a quote for a set of 16 Rays GTC Nuts.

$100, posted to my door!

just need to get some measurements to make 100% certain that the GTC nuts also will fit on a GRC Wheel.
