Michellin PP2 now too expensive

Anyone bought 205/45/16 tyres lately? I need to replace the G'year F1 GS-D3s after only 20,000km and have been quoted $280-$290 for Michelin PP2s. Much as I like the PP2s, I cant see paying that price (esp when Jax advertise 205/55/16 at $219 but cant do the 45 ratio at that price)

Anyone recommend good road (not track) tyres closer to the $200 mark? Any Yokos?

Paid for a set in January they were around $260 then, I think that was an increase of about $10-15 over the set I got in April 2006 which lasted 40,000 Kms and nearly three years.

As long as they keep making them, I'll keep buying them.

Other people like the Toyo Proxes TR-1 but these are a softer tyre

Others like the RE001 which is a topic of much debate here

then there's the GS-D3s which you already have and you know how they perform

then there's a cavern back to things like Maxxis which no-one talks about on here, then we're pretty much out of options.

Not many cars eat 205/45/16 tyres, ergo they're more expensive than other sized tyres of the same brand.

You may be better off getting a set of original 15" rims and getting some 15" tyres, there will be a whole world of choice and better prices in that size.

I have a set of NB8A rims for sale if you're interested... They will get you into the 195/50/15 tyre market, and will be much lighter than the wheels you've got now.

In Feb I paid $275 each for 205/45/16 PP2's.

You may also wish to check out the Kumho KU36, these can be had for very nice money but are a bit off in size 215/45/16 from memory which are perfectly OK

Expect them to stick like glue, can't comment on longevity.

While we are at it I've been looking around for 195/50/15 PP2's around northern sydney and prices are around $185 but most places are trying to talk me out of them saying there is always _____ which is better and cheaper.

Anyone found better prices for PP2's in 195/50/15 in the sydney area? (not interested in RE001's the whole Japanese vs Australian made thing has put me off)

Try Jax at southport, they did the 205/45x16 PP2 for me for $250 each, and I just bought some Continental premium contact 2 tyres yesterday for my X trail from them for $250 each and everywhere else was quoting me $320

KU36 wouldn't suit a daily drivers. Kumho KU31 is much better suited to being on a daily.

I also have a sets of 205/45x16 RE001 (Japanese) with no complaints.
Good grip, quiet, bugger all noise when pushed.

Thanks for all your responces. I have had two suggested from the tyre shops:

Maxxis I-Pro, new tyre with very good reviews. Havent heard of any on MX5s though and not convinced on Maxxis as a brand.

Goodrich G-Force Sport. These are apparently very good quality, Goodrich a division of Michelin, at a much lower price ($100 less per tyre). I know a few people on this forum have these tyres - thumbs up or thumbs down?

If not I will probably bite the bullet and take the best advice to buy the PP2s, but jeez the dollars really hurt

I paid $260 each for my PP2's about six weeks ago which was a substantial jump in price from the previous set.

BFG GForce Sport are quite an acceptable tyre.
They are NOT PP2s, but...
215/40/17 1 year, 22,000kms, 3 track days and 1 skid pan, with some 'spirited' driving 'occasionally' .

They still have plenty of legal life left in them now.
Dry grip-Good
Wet Grip-Good
Noise-Good
Wear rate-Good
Value for $-Good

For a street car with normal sensible driving, they are perfectly adequate and will not disappoint.
If you drive to find the limits, then PP2s will offer better performance all round.

My 2c worth.
It will be a difficult decision for me next year whether to replace with same, or go PP2s.
$100 per tyre saving is not insignificant.
