Got denied for a RWC today, after learning that my tyre placard states 5.5" wide wheels (which I replaced with 7" wide TE37's) and therefore I need to buy four new tyres to put on my old wheels to simply pass a RWC to clear a defect.
What the hell? This would have to be the most ridiculous bit of literature in the big book of RWC. Apparently you're only allowed wheels maximum 1" wider than stock.

Sorry to be the voice of reality here, but when it comes to modifying cars (which I've been doing now for 20 years) if you don't stick within the acceptable guidelines, you risk getting pinged for it. DOT Regs are readily available in every state AFAIK.
You can't actually blame the car - it's not like it asked to be modified.

You can't borrow another set of wheels within spec from someone? I mean your just going to get a RWC and put the TE37's back on anyway...

some states only allow 1 inch wider than standard. but it's from any standard fitted rim. so you can use the widest rim supplied with the car/model/chassis and add 1 inch.

Get yourself 4 new tyrs at around $80 each and sell the 17s...you should get more for them off the car than on?
I'm sure one of the vultures on this site will take them off your hands

Where abouts did you get your rwc done?
If thats the only thing they could find wrong with your car I dare say they just want something down on the paper work so it looks like there doing there job well!!!
Its no hassels at all mate.

Dont know how the rule book reads but I would be arguing that even the NA's were sold with an optional 6" rim overseas.

Jace,
I have set of Watamabe's (white) 14 inch with brand new tyres (185/60x14)on then sitting in my garage, you are most welcome to use them to get a roadworthy.
I GUESS YOU WENT TO AN rwc JOINT CLOSE TO WORK WITH A NAME THAT STARTS WITH R?Very hard there, I got knocked back on tyres that I thouh had another 3000klms in them!!
But I am pretty sure that in Vic you can only exceed both the width and diameter of the standard or any manufacturers optional wheel by one inch which means that any NA running 17's in Vic is illegal!!! How some of those 4wd's get away with it amazes me.
Hence my 15x7'S on an NA8A which had 14x6 as standard.
Peter.

It's quite easy with the internet to look up any of these regs before doing mods...
