Wheel Spacers

Postby Mick93 » Sat Jan 10, 2009 6:56 pm

Hey I need some info on wheel spacers. I just bought a set of Goodwin Wilwood brakes. Unfortunately they just touch my rims (15"BBS RC's). If I go down the path of wheel spacers how much space would I get? will I have to roll my guards? I don't really want to get rid of the brakes but it might be the only option.

NA, NB, or NC?

MX5 Mania sells different width for the NA & NB. Wheel spacers available in 20mm and 25mm.

Or you could try these [clicky], which I used to have on my old Honda Integra, they're only 6mm thick. Though these simply sit between the hub and the wheel, unlike the Mania spacers which uses bolts etc.

With the Honda Integra I had (1993), I didn't have any issues.

I had them on there for 14yrs without any dramas. Then again, apart from the wheels, the Integra was stock (109kw). The wheels that I had were Enkei RP01s with a size of 16x7s.

I initially had the wheel spacers on all four wheels, but after a year or so, I removed the front ones and just left the rear ones. Can't remember for the life of me why I did that - I can vaguely recall it's either to do with slight vibration or some rubbing when turning the wheel.

As with 99% of aftermarket alloys, the wheel centre hub is bigger than the mazda ones. If that is the case, I highly recommend a centre hub adaptor ring for your alloys (If you haven't got them yet). This will help with the centering of the wheel and the distribution of the weight to the hub (as opposed to the studs bearing the weight).

It's always best to let the hub carry the weight of the vehicle rather than the studs.

If you only need a little clearance Justjap have 5mm spacers for 4*100. http://justjap.com/store/product.php?productid=17031&cat=0&page=1

Pretty sure they are illegal on the street though.

I've used 20mm front and 25mm rear bolt-on spacers on my NA using wheels which had about 5mm more offset than standard. i.e. total offset from standard was around 25F/30R on 195/50r15s with no centering rings. Guards were rolled in but not stretched. There was a fair bit of neg camber and the car was very lowered.

Under those conditions the tyres just cleared, tucking themselves up inside the rolled guards on full bump with 1 or 2 mm to spare. There were no other problems. Make sure the spacers, the inside and outside studs and all the nuts are high quality.

There's no way I'd use just spacers without at least fitting longer wheel studs. The wheels tend to fall off on high speed sweepers when you do that. I've seen it happen a few times on track days now.

FWIW, wheel spacers (even bolt-on ones) are not engineerable as far as I know.
