Hi everyone,
Ever since i came back from wakefield park a few weeks ago, i've noticed an awful noise when i brake.
It's become worse these few weeks, the noise is ALWAYS there, i'm not 100% sure if it's the brakes, but it's def comin' from the rear of the car.
There is this contact "grrrrkk grrrkkkkk grrrkkk" sound, kinda like a grinding/creaking sound.
Could it be burnt/cracked brake pads or is it the common problem with the loose brake spring clips ??
i've done some research myself, i came across a "rear pad fitting kit" at mazdaparts.co.uk
http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info. ... cts_id/959Is that what i need to fix the problem??
Also, does this happen to the from brakes too?? I couldn't dint a fitting kit for the front calipers
ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH MUCH APPRECIATED !
Regards,
Robbie

Not sure about the problem is, but if you after those fitting kits, and your car is an NA8 or NB8A then I have sets here, front and rear, for cheaper that what MX5parts sell them for;$20 for fronts, $15 for rears.

I would advise you to get it checked by your local brake centre. You could be damaging discs or have damaged pads who knows. They will be able to tell you quickly is my guess. Some things do not wait- this sounds like one to me but it is your call.

Personally I'd actually take the wheels off, check if there's a wear point anywhere around the disc. Then check the pads and retention clips. If something is scraping and squeling is should have very clean metal somewhere that'll make it obvious. Until someone actually looks and sees what it is... you'll just get speculation. You can also use a bar to turn the wheel with it jacked off the ground and reproduce the noise with the handbrake slightly on.
It may be as simple as the rotor is slightly warped and you've got a partial contact of pad->disc.

Grease the calipers (Common overlooked maintence issue)
Warped rotor (make that grrr grrr sound)
Worn out pads?
Does the hand brake still work properly?
The shims and clips and M spings are perished (usually a rattling noize)

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP!
i'm getting a new clutch fitted this thursday and i'll have the mechanic check it out for me then.
I just wanted to ask fellow 5 owners to see if they have experienced the same issues.

wun911,
warped rotor ... it sounds very likey ... coz my car is making the sound regardless of me braking or not ...
Pads are quite new ..... they may have cracked due to over heating, they are just cheap pads.... not sure if it's the pads .. maybe
handbrakes work fine .. no issues
haven't noticed a rattling noise ... so the clips and shims hopefully are ok
Thanks man ... you put it in an easily understandable way ... lol
i'll get it checked out asap

Another vote for warped rotor/s...
Did you put the handbrake on after getting into the pits from the track? The area being clamped by the pads keeps heat while the rest of the rotor cools... Not good.

I would always leave the car running for a few mins after i get into the pits WITHOUT the handbrake on ....
then i'd turn the car off, put it in first gear and leave the handbrakes off....

You finally found the problem.
Too bad shims and springs arent available seperately for the NB8B/C.
I've found you will need to buy the full OEM brake pad kit from the UK and use the shims from that...

Hey Garry, don't mean to doubt you,
but are you sure that the NB8B's do not need an M clip?
My rear pads move around !!!! They can jiggle around 2 - 3 millimetres, left, right, up, down ......... and they are making an awful noise becoz they're touching the inner ring of the brake discs
I was told by a mechanic that it was because i am missing the M clips .........
PLEASE HELLLLLPP!!!!

You need the anti rattle clips at the top and bottom of the pad to located the pads vertically but the NB8B/C dont have the auxilary M shaped spring that goes on either side of the pad to spread the pads apart. It's posible that you still have bits of the anti rattle clips there but over time they get brittle and crack and bits of the clip break off. I think the pad will come pretty close to falling out of the caliper if the whole clip is missing.

What Garry said. Have a look at the photo in this link - that's what is fitted on the rear of an Aussie NB8B/C. 52 pounds plus freight for OEM from UK is pretty reasonable too.
