what are the differences apart from pillow ball mounts?

on flex you can adjust height without changing spring pre load i think.

I'm not interested much in suspension (unless we're talking airbags!), but hasn't this been hammered to absolute death?

JDM SS springs 6/5 kg
JDM Flex springs 7/6 kg

The flex dampners are stiffer then the SS. The SS will let you drop the car down to 12.5 inches (NB), the flex can go lower because of the adjustable lower perch.

Also SS are a mono tube design, where as the Flex are a dual tube strut design. I think this is why the Flex are illegal on the road, I dont know about the mono flex though.

I think the momotube design is suposed to be better, helps disipate heat or something...

Yes, the flex can go lower. But unless you have the extra rear travel that the pillow mounts or NB mounts provide you will spend most of the time riding on the bump stops......which I can tell you is not very comfortable.
