I'm looking for tyre recommendations for a 2004 SE.
It's only dríven on weekends, if it's sunny and dry!
Do I stick to the factory issued, or is there something better for the $$$ ?

If it's only in the dry, the Federal 595RS did really really well on a recent test, and on a GTR skyline at a recent track day performed really well.

I doubt you'll be able to get the OEM tyres. Personally, I've been using Yoki ES100's on this and my previous MX-5, though I've heard good things about the Michelin Precedas and may give them a go next time. However, mine is a daily driver and I'm prepared to sacrifice a little dry performance for wet weather safety, so my needs are a little different.

Hi D50... new to this forum and have only just started going through the archives, so will take a bit to catch up with you lot and read from the same page.
Anyway, about your tyre recommendation... I went through the OEM Toyos in 15k. Found them noisy and a little bit wanting terms of both grip and tyre life.
These were replaced with Continental SportContact 2... on the SE 17" rims, the tyre only comes in the XL spec (extra load) and means stiffer side walls. For me, these were great and by far the best grip/feedback tyre I've dríven on (in both dry and wet conditions). At $320 each, they were a bit expensive, but still significantly cheaper than the OEM Toyos.
The Contis lasted me 30k and have just been replaced with R888 semi slicks. So far so good... but damn they're noisy!!! I do alot of 'spirited' driving and the occasional track day. But as my daily drive, I now need to get a second set of wheels and tyres so I can save the 888s for the track.
Just on the validity of tyre comparisons in the mags, the results shouldn't be taken forgranted as fact. They normally test the tyres using FalcoDores/Magnries... and each of these use their tyres very differently. There's nothing better than comparing the tyres yourself for your own driving style. Short of that, the next best thing is to get feedback from owners of the same vehicle.
