I think you are seriously underestimating the cachet of name watches. This months Motor had a $79 G-Shock Casio up against the IWC 'Top Gun' $18,000. The one I would choose was the $19,000 Breitling, but it did have a build in global emergency beacon

But the G-Shock would be just as, if not more accurate and would resist bumps better :wink:

thanks for all your feedback about my question on the Rota wheels, I just want to put the best of everything on my na8, I guess you could call it my mid life crisis car ( well that's what everyone else calls it )
Ihave been in love with these little cars since I first saw one back in 1989, now I have one so to me its a long term project, upgrade brakes, motor ect a few tastefull cosmetic changes nothing major, want to keep the car looking standard so that the changes are subtle, so yes I will be asking lots of questions

An interesting point on life-ing components, I have a guide to setting up Valiant Chargers from Leo Geoghan for racing in Production Touring Cars from 1971.

As well as how to prepare the engine for the rules and the exhaust to build and so on, in the suspension set up he mentions the wheels. The R/T Valiants had the W35 wheel option, 14x7 inch alloy wheels made by ROH in the classic Jelly Bean style of the early '70's.

These wheels were to be replaced every 6 race meetings. These wheels were one of the simplest and strongest designs of the time and yet they still were lifed at something like 600km of use.

Even today, race wheels are only used for a few race meetings before being replaced by the big boys. V8's only get about half a season out of a wheel if it isn't damaged before hand. For all the wheel failures that we have seen first hand how long were they used for on the track, what had they hit or been hit with in terms of ripple strips pot holes track edges and so on. On an old set of three piece wheels I had, the rims were re rounded at least once a year due to the hiding they copped on the track launching over ripple strips and so on.

Also need to bear in mind that there are particular brands which are more common for track use than others, hence these brands are of course likely to suffer failures more than other (often inferior) wheel brands given the punishment they will cop.

Just doing an internet search for wheel failures is not going to tell you the full story.

Again...knock-offs are a different issue topic altogether.

Some of the distributors / manufacturers like to label similar designs from a lesser brand as knock-offs to create a sense of poor quality, but they conveniently ignore the fact that they very likely also have designs that were copied / interpreted from an earlier design from another brand.
