Hi,

Emillio has just got back to me with the info on freight and availability of these rims.

Has anyone got a set (15x8 - +36) and running a 225/45x15 tyre?

Just keen to know from an owner if they fit a NA ok without hanging out the guards or rubbing anywhere (I'm presuming some guard rolling may be required).

There are heaps of pictures on the web, Emilio's site has the links and on the US mx5 sites there are even more.
The 225 45 15 fits quite well maby a bit of roll and a fair bit of camber, but you need camber to make the wide tyers stick. The 225 50 15 will fit but more rolling is nessary and don't go well on front, you will have rubbing with these.
Let me know what 225's you get and how good they are, the Hankook rs2 that a lot of US guys use are not available in Aus, so I'm opting for the Falken azenis 205 50 15.
I would like to run bigger rubber myself, but I don't think it's worth getting a tyre that does not stick just because it's wider.
I have spoken to Emilio about importing tyres by container, I just have to find If I will get clobbered with taxes.

Yeh seen a lot of photos just a lot of them don't say if their +40 or +36 so was interested if any locals had them.

Looking at this point to use Kumho V70A's as their available off the shelf in the 225/45 size (tad wider and smaller diameter than the 205/50's) A couple of mates are having exceptional results with them on their Honda powered Lotus Elises so I figure why not give them a go - at $310 a tyre their also cheap as.

FWIW if your after a specialist size or compound in R spec rubber most of the motorsport tyre importers will bring you in a set with their next order.

I have 15x8 +40's with the 205/50-15 Azenis and have no problems with rubbing, even at full steering lock. They are well inside the guards so i cant imagine that +36's would be much of a problem although Emilio does reccomend more camber on the +36s. Its only 4mm more offset.

Have you dríven mx5's with any other performance tyres? I have looked at the options for tyres in Aus and from what I can find out the Azenis is as good as any other legal road tyres for grip. How do you find them?

Actually i havent.

I have gone from 17x7 boat anchors on cheap tyres to 15x8's + Azenis so my praise of the Azenis could be part tyre and part reducing unsprung weight (i dropped 4 kgs per corner!).
there are plenty of good 205/50s to choose from. I picked the Azenis because i was running the 8s and wanted the widest tyre i could get. the 205s Azenis are more like a 215.

Other have complained about wet grip from the Azenis but im more than happy with them, they probably will have less wet grip once they wear down due to the tread pattern, but i dont drive hard in the wet anyway so thats not a concern of mine. They went pretty well on a wet day at Wakefield 2 weeks ago although there was certainly a few driver errors made on the day!! :oops:

I hope to get 12 to 15 thousand K's out of them with a few track days thrown in.

How sticky are the V70A'S? , do they compre to the top line road tyres and get mileage or are they more like the Azenis, and sort of half way to a race tyre with a bit harder tread, that only get 15 or 20,000 km?

Well depends on compounds I suppose (they come in Soft, Medium and Hard) but their R-spec race tyres so I suppose 10-15000k's might be the life of them at most.

You really have to sort out your usage and then look for something thats suitable. The guys circuit racing will be after something different to those doing sprints. If its mainly a road car your probably after reasonable mileage with good wet and dry performance.

I don't know enough about MX5's yet to comment of what works well at this point :oops:
