Nuh uh. NA6s can run a 7 inch rim in Type 2 NSW, as well over 200 (1000 S Special + some number of S Limited) were sold with a 14x6 inch BBS rim in "the country of manufacture". Standard cars were also available with optional 14x6 rims from Mazdaspeed and SPA, and I am sure more than 200 buyers ticked this option. This is important to me, as I am moving from 6.5 to 7 this season, as the previous owner of my car also assumed 6.5 was the maximum allowed.
The largest 'volume' wheel I can find for the NA8 is the R2 model with a 15x6 BBS, which ran a 195/50 tyre.
EDIT: I should add that when the NA6 was released Mazda could not build the 14x5.5, 7 spoke Daisies fast enough to keep up with demand. As a result many cars were sold with the optional 14x6 alloys or 14x5.5 steel wheels, in Japan. The Daisies seemed to be reserved for the rest of the world.
