In Canberra there does not seem to be a rule on age of tyres actually fitted to cars, but I have been advised by a couple of tyres places that they are not allowed to fit tyres over 5 years old to rims. This includes re-fitting 5 year old tyres that have been removed for rim or puncture repair. I know of several people that couldn't get old trailer tyres removed, repaired and re-fitted. I don't know the legal basis behind this ruling.

Re handling - check that you don't have toe-out at the rear as this can cause oversteer on a stock suspension NA. Toe-out could be being caused by worn bushes, which can create a four wheel steering effect.

The two NA6s I have had with stock, then modified, suspension were more inclined to understeer and had to be induced into severe oversteer, although slippery road surfaces and road camber changes can catch you out.

I run 28 psi on the street (in Michelin Pilots then Pirelli P7s) which suits me for ride vs handling and then pump up a few pounds for more spirited highway driving.

And the Trampios may have already been a couple of years old when sold new.

It is illegal to sell a tire that is over 6 years old.

Unfortunately, don't know what authority, or in which jurisdiction, is being quoted.

Re the tyre issue, sounds more likely to be a policy of tyre shops rather than a law. If I owned a tyre shop I wouldn't fit anything that is likely to be dangerous - that's just asking for legal trouble regardless of what the statute book says.

I disagree with Dan about MX5s being naturally tail-happy. I found that new stock suspension of the 1998 was, if anything, slightly bias to understeer. With the coilovers it is very balanced. If the tail is kicking out easily, that sounds like a problem worth fixing rather than sucking-up.

I never said they were tail happy, I said they do what they are told and it wont step out unless you tell it to.

Okay, we agree then :)

In any case, if the car is being super twitchy I think it's worth continuing to follow up. That's not normal imho.
