There may also be duty payable in addition to GST have a look at http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4368.asp

There will be duty plus the GST. Something like a total of approx 20% rings a bell.

import duty = 5% of cost of items

gst = 10% of import duty + cost of items + cost of shipping

total payable = duty + gst

eg- $1000 item + $200 shipping

duty = $1000 x 5% = $50

gst = ($50 + $1000 + $200) X 10% = $175

total = $175 + $50 = $225
