Thanks for the suggestion on the tyres mate.

I guess finding a set of rims that you'd love is always going to be a challenge but at least i've got the specs of what i'm looking for now.

Again, after my experience with the 18s on my current car (which has to use low profile tyres), I think i'm going to steer clear of them for a while (I was hoping that you can still fit some decently thickness tyres on 17s without hitting the car).

btw. Other than tempe tyres... anyone knows anywhere else that have a large range of wheels on showroom?

what is purpose of the rims? purely for aesthetics?

i think some of the ROH's look hot on an mx5.

or works.. mmmmm...

Yep, purely aesthetics but I still want to make sure it doesn’t impact on the original performance & balance of the car.

And I don’t want to have to invest in changing any part of the suspension like I’ve seen on so many 17s and 18s setup….

Hi !

I've got a NB8a as well and have looked at every possible mag wheel out there, I'd definitely go the 16 x 7 and 205/45 tyre as well. For tyres I'd look at the Firestone Firehawks, I've had them on my last two cars including my NB8A in 205/45 and I think they're a great street tyre, especially in the wet plus they're only about $150. Also they have nice smooth sidewalls and look great with tyre shine !

All the guys with 17's will shoot me for this.My NA runs 15x7, AGX, King springs,when the 15's were getting painted I put the 14's on.It was a nicer car with the 14's,reacted quicker, felt more balanced and didn't fall into pot holes. So looks aside don't go overboard,the old rule of plus 1 has a lot of merit.

Thanks for the suggestions toyMx5 – which store are these wheels from?

Does anyone know any good places to shop for rims??? I don’t mind going anywhere in Sydney.

On the tyres – I read somewhere that 205/45 are more expensive than 215s?... because they’re less common, is that true?

Thanks for the tip Overdrawn – I think that’s why I’m leaning towards 16s… ride quality and balance steers that way it seems. It’ll juts be harder to find rims that is my type and fits well.

I assume by +1 rule you mean not to go over 1" more than the originals?

Don't forget that if you go 215/45 16 your speedo may be out as well.

I assume the speedo might be out cause of he 15 -> 16 increase... right?

Or i'm totally wrong and the width of a tyre actually affects the speedo too?...

The 45 in 205/45/16 or 215/45/16 is a ratio. Basically this means that the sidewall height is 45% of the tread width. So by going with 215's you'll have taller sidewalls effecting the spedo's accuracy.

In that case, would i be wrong to assume that BOTHthe increase from 15" -> 16" AND the use of 215 instead of 205 would affect the speedo?

What's the fix?

Total rolling diameter is what affects your spedo.

As Ben said the 205/45/16 translated to 205 width, 45% of your width is sidewall height, 16 is the wheel diameter. So your 205/45/16 will have 92.25mm of sidewall vs 96.75mm for the 215/45/16. Thus making a difference in overall diameter of 9mm.

The number of revolutions carried out by each tyre will obviously be different which then affects your spedo.

That would mean that my speedo will read less speed and register less distance than what I’m actually doing? (given that the car is setup for 15” originally).

I assume it wouldn’t be something that I have to get fixed by law since it’s less than 5% difference?

maybe you can yank out the needle and recalibrate it? if you are very anal.

i don't think it's worth the effort for such a small change.

e.g. if you are travelling at 80km/h, your speedo will be out by 4km/h... not very much out at all.

my speedo is out by 1km/h. and it vexes the crap out of me :roll:
