I guess I'll start it off with some inspiration, even though it isn't my car

I'm confused. First I read threads why wider tyres don't improve cornering for the MX5 and now I see these. The wide tyres look so cool, makes me want to trade in the standard SE rims. Does the handling contradict the threads I have been reading?

Nothing to be confused about.

Brian's car is running the Cosworth Supercharger and puts down around 165+kW at the wheels.

His car is set up for autocross rather than track work and the extra wheel width is for straight line traction. With his extra power he doesn't need to worry about the negatives of extra weight.

On a circuit he drops back to a smaller width because top speed is effected by the large amount of air he needs to push aside.

One thing to remember is that the US doesn't restrict the size of tyre and rim you can run on a road car. Here most State governments restrict the legal limit to 25mm (1") extra in width and diameter. Also on the track CAMS limits the rim width for under 2 litre cars to 200mm (8")

Don't you mean he drops back to a smaller width of tyre because top speed is affected by the higher rolling resistance caused by the wider tyre?

I think that's backwards. With a wide tyre you have a contact watch wider than it is tall. That means there's less surface area for straightline acceleration/deceleration. The wide tyre however changes direction slightly easier giving better turn in and slightly higher lateral grip. Which is much more important for autocross where your changing direction constantly.

RPF1 17X8 +45 offset with 215/45 Michelin Pilot Precedas. Next time I'll go 8.5" width, with similar/less offset.

Hello everybody, thought I had better put up a picture with the 17" mazda 6 rims, that were on our car. Some like, some dislike, but the main reason I painted them that colour was to hide the brake dust which it does very well, also it suits the winning blue, and I like the 5 spoke design.
