Why are people scared of buying the SE Bilsteins???

Postby silvermiata » Fri Nov 07, 2008 11:40 am

i ve put them on 2-3 months ago, i had the lowered kings with stock nb shocks before and the car was pretty low, then when i put the se billies with the mazdaspeed springs, car has raised about an inch.. its a good height but could have been a little lower...

comparing to stock they feel firmer, but not extremely firm... handling has improved for sure... now i feel and understand how sh*t my rear nankang tyres are.. anyone out there thinking about buying nankangs.. dont touch them...

ah also, price is a big factor.. i guess you can add a little more and get kyb's which are adjustable...(i ve got mine for 200 with the springs but they were a bargain i guess)

Here's some feedback I had from Shaikh at FCM today:
All NB Bilstein shocks are the same body length, I had mistakenly thought them to be different, poor measurement I'd say.

The MSM/'SE' shockd can be revalved.

So hmm, these suddenly got a lot more appealing to me... anyone want to lend me $400?

I looked at a set of SE bilsteins for my NA, but was told not to as in the NA will make it sit around an inch higher...

But it's more bragging rights to other MX5'rs that you have adjustable ones!

Yeah I think unless you change the tops you end up with a very ugly bum up in the air look. Hey Lou when you put NBs on NAs do you change the tops to make them mount higher and the car lower????

Not really.

Pound for Pound the Teins are unbelievable value, They offer a fantastic rate of adjustments for not much more than the old king of the hill Koni & Kings/Eibachs depending on wallet thickness.

Ted makes two valuable points worth noting in this bit "I have not had to touch it after setting up"
a) once it's set up having pretty threads doesn't matter (the after bit)
b) being able to set it how you want it does matter (the important before bit)

I've had stock, Koni/Eibach, Bilstein/Eibach and now Teins = too high/roly poly, toooooooooooooooo low but cornered unbelievably, a bit harsh but could have been tuned to Ted's specs and finally just right.

If I was to do it again or was asked for a pennies worth of advice I'd recommend the Teins in a breath, if dollars were tight I'd tell you to get these and put aside 50cents a week until you wear these out, then get a set of Teins by which time you will want an NF anyway  and now you have the deposit for it :)

The spare car has SE suspension and this setup is a lot less harsh than the 10AE setup with great handling to boot, so someone buy em so Boyracer will sell me a gearbox :)
Went for a drive and there were slow cars everywhere, why are NC's so common . . . must be NC = Normally Cardiganed.

So Lou
Would the ride height be the same as a stock NA?
What modifications do I need to alter to fit these in an NA?
How much use have these had (do they need rebuilding)?
Thanks
Rob

Fitting these in a NA all you would do is probably get the springs reset a bit lower, only because a NB weighs about 100kg. more than a NA therefore it will sit a bit higher......they bolt straight in with no modifications.

They have only done about 26000km. so they are like new.

Dan...The NB tops work fine on a NA....they give a bit more suspension travel then the stock NA tops...
NC Roadie, NC Racey, ND Racey….and a 30AE

Plus several others in the bone yard...

What is the max camber you can get with them? I'm maxing out stock suspension at the moment and still chewing the outside of tyres... (damn QR)

I'll find some money if you tell me they'll go out to 2.5 deg front and rear. :D

how much can you go to now? on stock gear

It is currently on fast street settings: just over 1 deg negative. It is maxed out.

The majority of my driving these days is to and from skid pans/trackdays/club runs.

Hey Boagsy
I'm courious how, having new shocks will improve your maximum camber settings.
If you currently can only get 1deg. negative.....something tells me its out of whack. Your suspension is possebly bent out of shape.

Although on the NA the suspension is a little different. essetialy.....they are very similar.
My NA can get about 2.25 max......but since the adjustable camber bushes were installed. at least -5 deg.
My car had been hit in the rear before I owned it & one side ajustability was less than the rest. rest of my wheels got -2.5.....

I would have guessed the NB8B should get at least -2.5 deg all round. without too much trouble.
If you have new bushes installed & you happen to have adjustable camber bushes.....
they've most likely slipped.
I'd be taking a closer look.

Ride height. :D

Lower = more neg camber available. If these will lower the car they will allow more neg camber. 8)
