Sell it to w Subaru Wrecks owner and get the MT90
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Hmmm... mine's more half half. It groans a bit when it does it on mine. Does yours do it proportional to the speed you're going?

isnt Redline Lightweight Shockproof only for the gearbox?

In the 5 I recently put Redline Lightweight Shockproof which everyone raves about

Be careful because Lightweight shockproof is for the DIFF not the gearbox, its not good with synchros, its too slippery, use redline MT90 for the GB. Look at the Redline website (the international one). Unfort ppl don't know this when they rave. I still have gear engagement issues with shockproof and it feels exactly like the website says would happen, sychro's slip. Putting in some mt90 soon.

Shockproof http://www.redlineoil.com/products_gear ... tegoryID=6

the redline site is so confusing when it comes to the lightweight shockproof to be used in the gearbox...

TRANSMISSIONS - MTL® can be used in most manual
transmissions and transaxles for both street and racing
use unless the manufacturer requires the additional protection
of an SAE 90 or the extreme-pressure protection
of a GL-5. In those situations the MT-90 (GL-4) or
75W90NS (GL-5) will provide good shiftability and synchro
compatibility and extra gear protection.
LightWeight Gear Oil can be used in transmissions calling
for a 75W or 80W GL-5
. 75W140NS will provide
greater high-temperature viscosity, reducing gear noise
and rattle.

im going to chuck it in anyway and see how she goes....from all my research so far, no one has had negative comments about the lightweight shockproof in the '5's gearbox - just hearsay.

Last time I looked MX5partsUK still sell the light blue OEM pads including clips if you want to stay with genuine parts. You can aso buy them from the US a bit cheaper but the pads are a different colour so I'm not sure how compatable they are with AUS delivered cars.

The "Genuine" replacement pads Mazda sell in Australia are supplied by Bendix. They are exactly the same as their "GEN-CT" ceramic technology pads that are sold in the aftermarket except for the box they are packed in.

They are an excellent pad but save your money and go and but them from your local parts shop, you will save yourself a bit of cash.

You should be able to re-use the old rattle clips & springs if they dont come with the new set of pads.

update on the pads and gbox fluid:

have now had light weight shockproof in there for 2 days and took it for a long spin....and WOW the shift is so precise and a lot smoother....all the hear-say about synchros crunching has not happened no matter how hard/quick ive shifted! in-fact, the quicker i shift, the more precise it feels now!

also managed to source genuine japanese brake pads(with all the shimmies/anti-rattle clips) which were quite pricey($200/pair) but wow does she stop on a dime now! and also got rid of all the front end brake clunks ive been complaining about :)

I've had both pads the re-boxed bendex from the dealer and the OEM ones from mx5 parts uk.

Both have good feel and stop well on track but OEM ones from UK are less dusty.

Good to see the light weight oil is doin wonders for you man, if you clean that magnetic drain plug you save a couple of ounces of dead weight.
every ounce counts

haha wun!
i think the 30kg worth of audio equipment in the boot well outweights 30 grams on the gbox sump plug :)

I had lightweight shockproof and I put in MT90 to see what the difference is. The mt90 feels more crunchy when you shift slowly, but when you shift quickly the mt90 feels way better, and for that reason I think I'll keep it in. But regardless the solid engine mounts made a monumental improvement on the shift feel, 100 million times better. unfortunately though they were too harsh for the old car rattling away so had to go back to mush as mounts. But I'll get some harder diff mounts when I change the diff so that should improve it too.

Little things like gearbox oil and new pads and adjusting pedals really transform the car don't they.

FWIW, I've been using the Superlight Shockproof (the yellow labelled bottle) in GB & diff (Torsen LSD) for almost 2 years. I emailed Redline Aust ref using it in the GB AND DIFF, & they advised it would be suitable for both. Then again, as you note, I guess they would as that's consistent with their website, but not the international one... Anyhow, it's been fine.
