It has an indicator "telling" you when to change gear. It seems to be biased towards economy driving. I'm not a fan.

Oh thats not so good- I cannot see that being much use. MX5s dont use much fuel and besides experts say that cars that are babied dont last as long as ones that get a rev every now and again. Pity about the crazy speed limits when a burl is out.

Tyre pressuring monitoring is compulsory in some markets (some European countries, IIRC). If it's seen as value-add in other places, makes production and marketing sense to leave it in.
