245/40/15 Maxxis VR-1

Postby 949Racing » Wed Apr 20, 2016 10:53 am

I didn't see any threads about this tire so I'm posting here. Probably not available in Australia but some enterprising individuals have found ways to bring other US market tires in. So maybe someone can make it happen.

This tire size is something we worked to bring to the market for over 8 years. Finally here! First batch sold out a month ago. Second batch just arrived. More sizes on the way. The VR-1 is a 200tw tire. Not as sticky as the RE71R or Rival-S but still very fast and much longer lasting. We don't sell tires so visit the Maxxis site to learn more or order.

Can't see this making it to Australia officially - it's hard enough to get 225/45/15s! The market here for a 245/40/15 must be minuscule.

I have imported tyres and wheels from the States before; however, the dollar was a lot stronger back then.

Emilio how do these stack up against genuine R-comps like the NT01 or A050? I understand the Maxxis is a higher tw slower tyre but how much slower are we talking?

The 15x10s on that NB look just about perfect...

The only other supplier in Australia who might do that size is Avon.

I'd be keen dependent on price and comparison to a semi-slick/ r-Comp in performance terms.

I would be keen to get on this too... just cause.

Emilio, have you guys got any comparisons, lap times, logs etc, going to this size tyre from 225/45 or 205/50 of a similar compound? Yokohama ad08r's are prrtty popular here for a street tyre.

It's a brand new tires so there is no real data on it. It Compares with all the other 200 treadwear tires sold in the US market with the exception of the two mentioned above that are sort of special tires. Grassroots Motorsports magazine has done a full comparison test with all the other fastest 200 treadwear tires and is due to publish it in the next month or so. I would look for that.

I emailed Maxxis last week and they have no plans on bringing it in to Aus. Even with cheapest freight from the US the cost is too high to import unless you can pre-mount them on 6ULs!

With the Yokohama range that we get here there is little need to move to a wider tyre unless stepping up to a Hoosier 245 - 275. The only issue is laying down the $ for A050s and dealing with the larger diameter. Performance wise a A050 is close to a Hoosier 245 slick and much faster than a NT01. If thats too expensive then the yoko A048 or AD08R slots in behind.

I just wish there was a 40 or 45R15 in the A050 range.

Looks like a rejigged Kumho KU36. Nice tyre. And since the KU36 came in limited sizes. This might sell better.

These VR-1s are more aimed as an AD08R competitor rather than an A050 competitor...

But why run the extra width unless you need it for grip. You may as well step up a grade in the Yoko's and run them instead for better grip in a narrower tyre.

In the states they don't have that option so this tyre makes more sense. Here I'm not sure there really is a market for it, unless you are competing in a class with a max of 200 tread wear.

This....

Though if your class allows 10inch rims then its strange to limit you to street legal tyres.. Unless its World time attack...

You _could_ rock up to a club event with the Maxxis VR-1's on a 10" rims, run in the street class and get an advantage. It would be totally against the spirit of the classes and the cost would be prohibitive so it would be a pretty stupid move. I'm sure the class rules would get tweaked to stop that anyway.

WTAC requires Yokohama AD08's as a control tyre in the clubsprint class... A050's in everything else.
