If the pipe slips or your heavy handed it can be an expensive repair, don't want to sound like morlock but i would look for a panelbeater to flare the guards

Rolling guards, when done correctly, uses a special tool with a nylon wheel that rolls over the arch lip and slowly bends it up bit by bit.
The nylon prevents the paint being damaged where the rolled rolls.
However, there is still the risk of the paint on the edge of the arch cracking when bent (apparently using a heat gun softens the paint so this doesn't happen)
Best option is to find somebody experienced and get them to do it, from memory it's not that expensive.
Otherwise there are a thousand DIY ways with differing levels of quality (from pipes, phone books, hammers, tree branches, basically anything that will fit in the gap)

I brought a guard roller for $70. Did mine. Let 3 other people borrow it for $20 each. Sold it on ebay for $50.
