Upgraded Handbrake Shoes

Hi All

Was wondering if anyone new of any options for upgrading the handbrake shoes in my little SE?

Primarily got the car to run in motorkhanas (& some track work) with a heap of motorkhana regulars performing this upgrade. Most do have heavier cars (Think EVO's & WRX's) so not sure if it'll be 100% required for the MX5.

Will have my first motorkhana at the RTDC Round #4 event on November 9th & will run the stock gear but looking for any potential upgrades / advice for the future.

The Mx5 uses the rear brake pads for the handbrake. No separate drum system. You could throw in a set a rear pads with good bite from cold.

Well, you learn something new everyday aye!

I'm so used to cars having a drum for the hand brake, I didn't even notice the MX5 was different!

I'll see how the current pads go in November & see if a change is required :)

upgrade the pad, clamp force or increase rotor diameter.

Given RTDC run on a wet pan, the handbrake doesn't need anything special as the low grip will help break traction relatively easy.

To make life easier, make sure your turned in before reaching for the handbrake and pop a coin in some tape and fold it over the button to make the handbrake "fly off" so while catching the slide you don't leave the handbrake up by mistake.

Oh yeah if it is wet. Time to have someone should you weight shifting and decelleration shifting. you may not get it this time. But on the wet is the easiet to learn/do.

RTDC do run good days... Although I may be biased since I've been an organizer at their days ;) First time competitor, so will be good to be on the other side of the fence this time :)
