Hi,
This is not something I need to do now, but I expect I will at some point. Changing the brake master cylinder on my daughter's 323 made me think about the NA. The manuals refer to a special tool when putting in a new brake master cylinder. I'd be interested to hear of anyone's experience with this. Does one buy, hire or borrow the tool?

The only tool I can remember reading about was to ensure that the Master Cylinder was bleed properly?
I replaced one a few years ago, and did so without any special tools. Can't remember exactly how I did it though.
I'd suggest having search on the big forum and in the miata.net garage site.....should be heaps on helpful info there.

You don't need a special tool.
I can't immediately recall, but it seem to remember that the only real problem (apart from bleeding,which wasn't hard) was getting the rod in place. However,that was after removing the whole booster assembly and may not be an issue when just doing the master.

Thanks for the replies. I should have checked the manual before posting, the references in Rod's manual to special tools are for ABS equipped brakes. There is also a tool to be used to adjust the vacuum servo if is being re-installed - a depth guage to set pushrod length, but the Haynes book uses a vernier caliper which would work just as well. (Just writing this makes me wonder if my daughter's 323 has been set wrongly at some time, the brakes are very sensitive with very little travel before almost locking up - slight exaggeration but you get the idea).
